Kitchenaid 5qt artisan stand mixer?

I hope you will forgive, me if this is the wrong forum but, I know where the cooks hang out.

I bought my first stand mixer tonight, because I am still fighting cancer and had to retire ( for the last part HOOOO-RAY). Suddenly, I have more time for cooking and baking!

I have two small problems. First there is a small chip in the flat blade, and secondly, I am either to stupid to attach the pourer so it will stay on or it does not fit on mixing bowl correctly
So if any of you know how to connect the spout, please help an old lady who can not see how to attach said pourer . . .. PRETTY PLEASE.

IF not I gues this Is just a vent.

I'd love to post a picture for you, Red, but my spout is either packed away or thrown out, just like everyone else's. As I recall, it doesn't attach per se, it just kind of sits on top and makes a general nuisance of itself. I find pouring from a flexible cutting board works more easily and neatly.

Perhaps if I say "no one uses it" a handful of people will show up to prove me wrong.

As for the chip, unless it looks like it's going to chip more from that spot, it should be fine, functionally. Replace it if it bothers you. Good luck - with everything!

Like FOAS, I never used mine, it's probably in the back of a cupboard somewhere. It's useless

As for the blade, I don't use my flat blade much either, I got a beater blade a few years ago when they first came out, someone here posted it. I love it, it works so much better than the beater that comes with the mixer.

You can probably find it locally, though it's probably cheaper online.

Enjoy the mixer, it's a wonderful appliance.

Steve777: You are wonderfully brave to take apart a mixer gearbox! I am in awe. The only question I have concerns the material of the gearbox case. Is it a steel case, or is it plastic? If it is a plastic case, then the problem could be caused by heating up due to the load, followed by distortion due to softening of the warm case. Several reviewers on another site encountered plastic gearbox cases in the newer mixers. But with a bit of luck, you might have one of the golden-oldies with a steel case. best regards, Peter-A

WOW!!!! I was the original poster back in--------May 2002??!!!! Can't believe this is still going! For the "rest of the story"-----I never did purchase a KA stand mixer after giving it much thought, but ended up buying a very nice GE hand mixer which I have been happy with and for me, seems to be all I need. I use a bread maker just to knead my bread and then I shape the kneaded dough, let rise, and bake in the oven. Glad my original question has been useful for comment for so many others in the last 10 1/2 years. I really appreciate all of these forums on GardenWeb and have learned so much over the years from all of you.

I also love my KA Pro. I bought one at costco about 3 years ago, use it extensively, and have never once had issue with it. That bigger motor will handle all kinds of dough, even biscotti which, I think, is the main reason I wanted one in the first place - my poor wrists just can't manage mixing stuff like that by hand.

I went through a KitchenAid Artisan in three years, which disappointed me. I did some research, found a local store carrying the DeLonghi (now with as much badge engineering as GM: Kenwood, DeLonghi, Cuisinart, Viking). I talked with them, bought it, brought it home and started a batch of Oatmeal Raisin cookies; it blew a circuit halfway through the batch, where the puny KA would just keep mixing. I called the store (their solution? "Let the mixer rest for 30 minutes and resume." My response, "Mix for five minutes, rest for 30? Really?"), and cleaned the mixer, returned it, and got a refund (after much wrangling). Instead, I bought the KitchenAid 600 Professional, which ran for three years before grinding gears off this morning on a batch of PeanutButter cookies.... My mixer gets used twice a week, usually on desserts, and never get close to bowl capacity, so they're not abused. All of which to say: you can spend $400 for three years of mixing with a KA, or the same for a DeLonghi that shuts down in ten minutes.... The earlier comment about wattage ratings is accurate: it's not about output, but usage. Based on experience, I'd buy the Hobart (KA is a spinoff of Hobart), but based on budget, I'll either repair the KA or replace it with another.

If you bought the mixer new, you certainly don't have to accept having a chip in the flat mixing blade. Call Kitchen Aid and they will make it right.

Thanks to all, at least I now, do not feel so stupid.
Looking forward to more cooking and baking.
The rest of the house can keep it's warm coat of dust, some things during an illness, just are NOT that important.

My plastic cover piece never attached either. I guess I am a little naive, stupid as I always thought that piece was too put on the bowl when I was using liquids to keep them from splashing and the spout was not for pouring out but used to pour stuff in.

I guess you learn something new everyday.
