Where to buy hosta?
Comments (26)My bf and I usually go over to Mansfield to watch the super bike races in August, otherwise we don't usually head down that way, but perhaps this year, if it isn't too late by then, we can go visit that garden near Bellville before we see the races, make it a weekend thing. The place over by Cleveland wouldn't be too far to go to either, probably an hour and a half at the most for travel. There's a place in Norwalk which is about 25 miles from me I'm going to visit, the lady there grows and sells hosta, daylilies and irises. I plan on buying some of her plants, since she's so local. Her website is www.dayliliesbythepond.com/index.htm Karen...See MoreGrowing my garden: hosta by hosta
Comments (13)Wow, this board is really buzzing! So many comments in such a short time period from such helpful gardeners! Thanks, all, for responding and for the warm welcome. I'm in NJ. I actually have that in my profile, and I'm unsure as to why it's not showing up on my posts. (I don't see preferences to show/hide it.) jadie88, I was searching for variegated Solomon's Seal last summer but had no luck finding it. And this year I decided I want to try red astilbe with some lighter-colored hostas to brighten up some areas between bushes. I don't have a lot of money to spend because I'm starting my raised-bed vegetable garden this year. But I do still need to add to my gardens out front. I planted them last spring after buying my house in the fall. The front does get sun, but it's rather uneven; the right side gets more than the left due to the sizes of the trees in front. I didn't realize how much of a difference there was until I saw how the plants/flowers were growing. The impatients on the right side seemed to triple in size, while the left side did not get much larger at all! So now I must forget about having a symmetrical look out front and get to replanting. ken_adrian, I'm not sure what I was thinking! Of course, more hostas! I can't wait to read through this forum to get more ideas and become more educated on hostas! (My mom had hostas when I was growing up, but she was amazed as well when I showed her photos of some of the varieties!)...See MoreWhere to buy Hostas in Houston/Woodlands area?
Comments (5)I'm no expert. I have some plants I've had for years and recently decided I wanted more of them. I don't even know the names of the ones I have, except the recent purchases. I can only tell you my experience. I'm in Dallas. We are definitely cooler here, as get a few freezes every winter. I grow mine in plastic pots. They get more cooling that way. Also, I put the pots on "pot feet", so I don't have a problem with slugs. They don't look too great here by August. That may be because, by then, I'm tired of watering every day. You won't have that problem. You get rain in the summer. It's worth a try. I love mine and the bonus is that they come back every year and are beautiful even though I neglect them. Choose easy to grow varieties, usually one that has been a past "hosta of the year", I understand. Regarding where to get them, try one of the independent nurseries. Northhaven has them here. It's the best nursery in Dallas. They kind of pioneered them here. I suggest you try the best nursery in Houston. If not, try a mail order nursery. There are several that are reputable. Just read some posts about growers. I just bought some that way and they were exactly as I expected. Good luck. Barbara...See Morewhere to buy mature hostas
Comments (6)Congrats on your first home! While I usually advise against buying mature hosta, I can see your point. First, lemme explain that there's a difference between a mature hosta and one with more than 3 eyes. Mature hostas have typically been left in a hole, untouched for more than 3 years.... Some hosta, depending on conditions, could take 10 years or more to mature. The roots cannot mature if a spade is taken to them for moving/division. Monrovia (the company whose plants are in dark green containers with "Mondrovia" on the sides) sells large divisions of hosta ($40+ a pot), but since they were probably field grown and divided to fit into the pot, their roots will have been severed. They may look good in a pot at the garden center this year, but there's a good chance that transplant shock on a large hosta will be great. If I were you, I'd look on Craigslist. Since it sounds like you've no intention to stay in this home long, you probably are looking for a quick, yet economical fix. There are people on my local craigslist who will allow you to come and dig out their hosta for nearly free. Good luck....See MoreUser
