Naylor Creek is my top choice. White Oak, Hallson's, and In The Country Gardens and Gifts, are others that I have been very pleased with.

My favorite is Northern Grown Perennials. I've ordered from them the last couple of years, and the root systems are huge.

I was also pleasantly surprised by Avalon Acres. Decent prices and really good sized root systems. I think their website is aahostas.com

Hallson's and Naylor Creek are very good choices as well.

While we're on the subject, how is Wade to order from? I've been checking out nurseries for my sister who lives in the US. There are some that they have that we haven't found anywhere else.

I live in Northern Ohio, Fremont to be exact. I'll have to check out those places ya'll have recommended.

you MUST make a pilgrimage to van wades garden in Mansfield OH ..... nirvana ....

ANYONE who lives within 300 miles... MUST GO THERE ....

and if you have extra time in the area... track down Kuk gardens just north of van ... by appointment only ...

and homestead.... peter ruh .. if that garden is still open...

all three are the cream of the crop for hosta gardens.. with thousands of varieties .... get a room and stay over night .... you will need 6 to 8 hours in each place ...

both toledo [black swamp] and cleveland have nice hosta clubs... get some info .. and consider joining .... at a minimum .... find out when the annual garden tour is... and go visit some hosta gardens ....

and please join the American hosta society ... 3 magnificent journals a year .... and an annual convention ...

the hosta library .. has a LINKS page which lists at least 50 sellers .... if not 100 .... price alone is NOT the way to go .... size does matter .. as some hosta can take 10 years to mature .... so often .. paying a little bit more is worth it ....

besides the places ken said you can check out cahoon's. they have a pretty good selection - a few thousand i think. And i think it will be a close trip for you. Some hostas you just have to hand pick imo

and i agree hallsons is also a great mail order place

Suggest you check out Bloomin Designs Nursery. Looks like they have over 100 hostas to choose from. We've always received large, healthy plants and I think they have a perfect score from the Garden Watchdog, so others must have got the same service.

Wade & Gatton is a must.
From I 71 (near Mansfield) take either Rt 13 south to Bellville, or Rt 97 east to Bellville, from there continue on Rt 97 for another 10 minutes and turn right at Dill Road, which leads you to Gatton Rocks Road, continue until you see the Wade & Gatton sign, cross the bridge, turn right, and continue up the hill towards the only house in the area. Look at all the hostas on the way up. At the top ask for Van.

Wade & Gatton is such a big deal to us hosta people, a virtual mecca of hostadom. But in Bellville, we asked for directions to get there, local folks had no idea who or what we were talking about.

Which nursery has the famous giant Sum and Substance? Is it Wade?
I've been to Cahoons, and it's worth a trip in the late spring. It's the biggest selection that I have seen. It's on the west side of Cleveland off of I90.

gatton died many years ago ..... i dont recall the story .. whether he was vans partner... of vans dad/uncle. ....

i didnt say buy from van .... I SAID ITS A GARDEN YOU HAVE TO VISIT .... buy if you want too ... he only sells a couple hundred varieties ...

the tree farm is the family biz... the hosta are vans retirement biz ....

van does have the giant SS ....

after collecting 1500 cultivars .... i still believe you should SEE A HOSTA IN PERSON .. before you buy it ... catalog descriptions can be sooooo misleading .... ergo ... i recommended the cream of the crop hosta gardens in OH ... frankly .. in the world.. and they are all within two hours of the original poster ....

though i had a few hosta... i really got hooked.. when i was invited by pauline banyais sister to join the MI hosta society .. and that first summer... the club rented 2 or 3 busses and the club went on an overnight trip to wade/kuk/ruh gardens .... i was hooked ... go figure ...

My bf and I usually go over to Mansfield to watch the super bike races in August, otherwise we don't usually head down that way, but perhaps this year, if it isn't too late by then, we can go visit that garden near Bellville before we see the races, make it a weekend thing. The place over by Cleveland wouldn't be too far to go to either, probably an hour and a half at the most for travel. There's a place in Norwalk which is about 25 miles from me I'm going to visit, the lady there grows and sells hosta, daylilies and irises. I plan on buying some of her plants, since she's so local. Has anyone ordered from Casita Azul? They have many of the hostas I like but I haven't heard anything about them.

I live a stone's throw from Casita Azul. I haven't bought anything from them plan to this spring. They said I can pick them up to save the shipping.

The Wade & Gatton Nurseries in Belleville Ohio does not have a website. You can call them for a catelogue. I love going out there to just walk in their gardens.
