The first plant is probably wintercress (Barbarea vulgaris). The next plant is starflower (Trientalis borealis). The third plant is obviously a violet, but I've never seen one of that color, so I'm not going to guess on the type of violet. The plant that looks like poison ivy is, in fact, poison ivy. Some people don't react to it. Other people don't react the first time they are exposed, but may react later, so your friend shouldn't feel complacent! The second-to-last plant, the white loop, is a root of trout lily. The bulbs send out these roots as a means of vegetative propagation, and sometimes the roots pop above the surface. The last plant is a pussytoes (Antennaria).

Hi, Angelsmama. I, too, downsized from a large rose garden when I moved a few years ago. I believe I've begun to appreciate the roses that I do still grow even more than I did the many I used to grow. My roses and I are more intimate. Diminutive choices: there are lots that grow well in pots. (That sounds a little Dr. Seussish, doesn't it?) I grew up in Dallas, TX, and found/find these to be good bets: Frances Dubreuil, Marie Pavie, Ducher, Hermosa, Souvenir de la Malmaison, Clotilde Soupert, Martha Gonzales, and Baby Faurax. Frances (which you mentioned as a first choice), Marie P, Souvenir, and Clotilde are fragrant. Please do post pics of your pot pets! -Carol

I plan on getting in trouble there. Plant swaps sound fun. The last swap I went to I bought some Sans from Ed Eby's son in 6 in pots for $1 each! They were some really nice plants. I like systemics also. I used to do things like fish emulsion, rubbing alcohol, and whatnot but still had bugs months later. I finally gave into Bayer and bought a big bottle of 3 in 1 and haven't had much trouble with anything except the occasional spider mite on my brugmansia. I'll have to find something potent for them soon. 3 in 1 doesn't work as a miticide. When a plant comes in the door it gets treated just as precaution so I don't usually have bugs on anything but my herbs.
