well, lucky you to have scapes coming up and even a iris? Injoy it.We have had very warm days here, very little rain, it rained a little last night, not enough to do any good.I had a daylily I wanted to plant today and get it out of its pot,and I was trying to dig a hole for it with my hand trowel, and usually in this bed,i dig them all with a hand trowel, but the gro und was too hard to dig it today with a little trowel.Well I finally got it planted, but, the ground was hard as a brick.

I can't imagine trying to dig with trowel in hard soil. We've had plenty of rain here and the ground is prime for pulling weeds although my hands are taking a beating LOL. Darn those Queen Anne's Lace. They are everywhere and roots as long as carrots.
Had our first frost already but not a hard frost which takes everything down for the season.:-(.

I've given up on cutting anymore scapes off. Just think of all those growers who have fields of daylilies. Can't image they go out and cut the scapes each season. What was I thinking???

Mississippi Memories and Little Red Wagon partially opened yesterday and with the cooler temps still has not fully opened.

I have ready to open blooms on 8 others but since frost is called for tomorrow night in Delaware it's a wait and see.

You will love LIGHT OF THE WORLD. I am so pleased with it this year. This is the second growing season for it here and it took off and gave me a wonderful show of lots of scapes and blooms and it still wants to bloom this late in the season for me.
Your MOZAMBIQUE NIGHTS has a great edge on it. Is the color a rose red?

Hi Julia - MN is a rose red here in DE which is a color I don't care for so I will probably dig it up next year unless the heat of 2011 changes the color. If it doesn't turn a deeper color next summer and you want it, I will send it to you.

It's hard to tell what the colors will really be next summer in the heat. I am hoping WG changes from a cream to yellow self.

Hoping you have some blooms on your scapes before frost.

digginde: Don't give up on MN. I am assuming it is your first season growing it so perhaps it is still adjusting?

Digginde - What a lot of lovely blooms you have for this time of year! My Mozambique Nights looked like yours for the first two years. This past season it darkened up in the heat and looked more of a dark rose purple. I like it either way.

Julia - Do you think your one-bud rebloomers will have time to bloom before a hard frost? That is strange that they each have only one bud.

Here is a deformed FFOE this morning on Mississippi Memories. It opened pretty flat. Sorry pics aren't so great. Went to drugstore to buyout the Solo 18 oz cups to start seedlings in. Came out to my unlocked car to find my Canon had been stolen. So I'm using son's $70 Kodak.

With the cooler temps all of yesterday's blooms are still looking good.

Debra: It has been an odd season here and typically if a scape comes up, it would have at least a couple of buds when its been here for a couple of seasons.

digginde: Don't apologize for the pics and sorry to hear about the theft. Hopefully your car insurance covers the theft. Such a changed world we live in nowadays.

Finally, this is a seedling cross of LTA X JD that I started back in Jan-Feb indoors and planted out in mid May.
One seedling bloomed after 8 months and also produced a proliferation.

I just found a scape coming up yesterday on Bitsy, and she's not supposed to be a rebloomer, but she has this year, and now she's sending up another. It'll be interesting to see if I actually get a bloom.

I guess this is as good a place to post as any. I haven't posted here before but I was reading and researching all summer to decide what plants to buy and where to buy them, so I know you folks have some good advice.

I started with a few daylilies in May and knew that I needed more. After reading glowing reviews here and elsewhere, I got a last-shipping-day order from Maryott. It should be no surprise that I received plenty of bonus plants (plus, nothing beats finding out that you have even more plants than the invoice shows once you start pulling the rubberbands off), and they were all in the ground by Sept. 30.

I suppose it's a good problem to have, but I'm not sure whether to let the new scapes grow. A single fan of BOLD MOVE (it was a double fan but one of the fans hasn't recovered...the only fan I lost on over 20 Maryott plants) put up a scape in late October, and I decided it was worth it to let it bloom. It has at least seven buds showing so far, and I think it will start opening around Nov. 12.

But on Nov. 6 I noticed a scape starting on a big 7-fan DARK REFLECTION. This probably won't bloom until around Thanksgiving, and being in Houston, the weather might hold up, but it might not. Is the smart move to cut it off and let the plant conserve its energy? I'm not sure what kind of temperatures or short daylight hours will stop it from blooming nicely since this is my first year with daylilies, but it's rare to get a real hard freeze here.

I can't help with the questions you have as I live in the northeast and our climates are different. I'm sure there are some Texas members who can help you though.

Here, I've cut the scape off a seedling I've been watching. We had a hard frost this morning and everything is drooping so no use trying to see if it would bloom or not. The buds weren't developed enough to try to have it open indoors. The Bearded Irises also met the same fate :-(.

I'm sure I'll see more next year so although disappointing, it is probably best to cut it.
Snow flurries are rolling in tomorrow evening into Saturday. Brrrrrrr, I'm not ready for the white stuff yet.

Alot of the daylilies are still looking very green but I'm sure this next round of cold weather should set them back more.

Well, I've decided I'm letting the new plants grow whatever scapes they want. BOLD MOVE opened its first flower today. It's only 4" diameter right now compared with 5.5" registration, but it's still very pretty. The plant looks pretty top-heavy with one small fan of leaves.
