? about really old seeds, how do I get them to germinate?
Comments (4)Hi Greengardener, I had great success germinating about half a dozen types of seeds last year, that were packed for 1998 or earlier. Some had never been opened, but the red Zinnias had been sown before and they were packed for 1991! Much of the seed viability will depend on how the seeds were stored. Was it a cool dry place? I store mine in the fridge. You can perform a germination test on a few of the seeds to check their viability. I did this last Spring on some tomato, cucumber, and chile pepper seeds. I got nearly 100% germination! Btw, I am doing some germination tests on some of the seeds I collected Fall 08. It's great fun!...See MoreHow do I plant and Grow Bamboo from seeds?
Comments (7)I brought in a batch of 300 moso seeds last year. I have detailed my expermentation with germination on my website trying various recommended techniques, including a table with the variables. You may find it a good read. Check previous entries to read the entire experiment. http://www.hardyoutdoorexotics.com/?cat=11 To make things easier for you, I germinated them directly in soil. I had a 75% germination rate by soaking the seeds in a 10% saltwater solution for 10 minutes, and rinsing off with water before sowing. 67% germination rate with a batch that had an overnight soak in a 20-20-20 solution. And 67% germination rate with a batch that had a soak in a 10-52-10 solution. Those two 67% germination rates were ranked in the top 3 for breaking through the soil the quickest at 21 days. A water soak also broke through at 21 days but only netted me a 58% germination rate. For those that recommend a brief refridgeration for these seeds, germination was delayed, and the success wasn't that great. Comments (1)Unless you live in an area where the fig wasp is present, the "seeds" in un-pollinated figs are not actually seeds. They do not contain a seed embryo and will not germinate. If you do live within the fig wasp range, half the seedlings will be male and not produce edible figs and the female figs might or might not be as good as the parent. That is why most people on the forum propagate by cuttings. The link below has a lot of information on the subject. Comments (3)Yeah, I would have waited until they were very orange and falling from the tree. Still, they may germinate. They're about the easiest things to start. Peel off the outside, wash the seeds. Throw them in a pot, water and watch them grow! I wouldn't think you'd need to soak them....See Morewhgille
