I think my husband is making unsafe pickles

I'm worried. I believe my husband is making dill pickles that are not safe. The recipe is from a family friend who is elderly and has been making them this way for years.

The recipe includes a brine (1.5 quarts water/2 cups vinegar can't remember how much salt) poured over the raw cukes (and dill/peppers and garlic) in jars and then screwing on the lids and sticking them in a cool dark place for a couple of weeks.

No refrigeration and no water bath canning.

He had a fit when I suggested it wasn't safe and that we should do some research before proceeding and has gone ahead and is making them right now.

I don't want anyone to get sick.
