Exciting Additions! Seeds and companion plants

It's pouring outside one of those gorgeous showers with no wind or stormy weather, so I decided it was the perfect time to tuck plants in my larger daylily containers with gaps.

I want to experiment more with mixing daylilies in with other flowers (or vice versa ) I had a theory that more roots to uptake water might help less winter cold sogginess, too.

I planted Echinacea "White Swan" and Pink Double Delight, various hardy geranium seeds in blues, purples, and whites, and some dragonhead seeds. (blue)

Also, I had found seeds with the root tip already peeking out IN THE POD, so figured I may as well plant! Wild :)

And I got my very very happyifying green seed cross in the mail, so those are ready to go.

I'm excited to see how this all will look in spring! :)

You've been busy. It was raining this morning, but gorgeous outside this afternoon. I "think" I moved the last of my daylilies I wanted to move. I may find some more. Spread a little compost over some plants & that was it for the day. I have some bulbs I need to plant-3 different daffs, some dwarf iris, & various lilies, hope to do that tomorrow.

Me too! I hope you post pics! I am terrible at taking pictures so I am counting on all you snap happy gardeners to get my fix of garden bliss! :)

triple_b, "That was the first time I have even SEEN Burpees in Canada period. They would not send to Canada, not even a catalogue to torture us with. Has that changed?" Burpee states that they cannot ship plants outside the U.S. They didn't say anything specifically about seeds. You might want to contact Burpee and ask them about seed shipments to Canada. Incidentally, Thompson & Morgan carries everything that Value Seeds does, and much more as well. Thompson & Morgan sells to Canada as well as the US, but their prices are higher than Value Seeds. The central part of their printed catalog has a "Last Chance Sale" with prices comparable to Value Seeds. MM

companion planting with delphiniums

Thanks so much! These are all great suggestions. I'm planning on putting in some moonbeam coreopsis in front of the delphiniums. While looking through some books last night, I saw a photo of the bright yellow coreopsis and blue delphiniums and it was stunning. I'll plan on putting in more cornflowers (one of my favorites) and stocks (one of my new favorits). I'll look into oriental lilies. I've never planted any so it will be something new to try. Margie

Rose Companion Plants

My current favorite companion plant for my roses is geranium "Johnson's Blue" (pictured). I am not currently growing clematis with my roses, but a clematis growing up through a large shrub or climbing rose can be very beautiful. Selection of companion plants depends on climate. The following are just a few that I have used effectively with my roses in Southern California: snapdragons (the tall kinds), pelargonium "angel geranium", catmint, agapanthus (the short kinds), anchusa "Alkanet", lobelia erinus, marguerites and alstroemeria. There are countless additional possibilities. I would recommend experimenting with plants that look like they might provide good color, texture and height contrast.

Kay- It's good to know cleome can reseed. That was one thing I meant to ask. It sounds like a great plant with the roses! Woodyoak- Clematis is always beautiful with roses. I have two metal arches in the fairy garden. Purple clematis would be perfect :) Aimeekitty- Again, your garden is beautiful! I have lavender, but it's Hidcote lavender, which is much hardier here. Catmint and salvia do well here...maybe the penstemon, but I'm not sure about the others. I do envy you your star jasmine. I just love that stuff, so I buy two small bushes at Lowe's every spring (only about $5 each) and put them in big pots, surrounded by white petunias. If I ever get enough money for a sunporch....it will be for star jasmine and an orange tree!!! LOL

nancy, which lilies will you plant? And did you just move your daylilies to more sun, or you just moved them out?
I am adding Graffity, Orange Coquette (bunches of smaller sherbert orange flowers) and Ocean Breeze (pale pink with darker flecks)
honalee, I will be excited to take pics, but it's fun now just to see little seeds popping up this week from the rain. My experiment to see if little perennial seedlings will survive the winter!
I just checked my green cross seeds and two germinated!!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

I can just feel your excitement! And you are so good at helping with that! :) So glad I will always be a kid at heart!

No babies here at this time of year but the DLs are doing well and we will be having puppies again in December. I have bulbs and hostas left to plant too.;)

I just need to replant the pixie lilies I dug last week, and move couple of large Matrix lilies that for some obscure reason I planted in deep shade. They are right in the roots of a hosta too, I can't imagine WHAT I was thinking when I planted there. Come to think of it, I have some other lilies I want to move. I planted them too close to my tiger/tigridium lilies, & they say that tiger lilies carry some disease that can spread to other lilies. So far these seem ok, & it may just be an old wives tale or something, but thought I should move them anyway. I love lilies, have several varieties of the Graffiti series. I usually try to add a few new ones every year.
I didn't move out any daylilies, just moved them to better spots. Lots of times when I get new plants, I just plop them in an open spot. Often those spots get overgrown quickly, or turns out there was a daff too close or something. I divided several that have really needed it. I did get rid of one daylily clump I have another of in the yard.

Cracking, sounds as if you have been really busy lately. This is a good time of year to get those garden projects done though as the weather is no longer hot.

Lol. I love planting stuff, although once again, I just started popping things in spaces and I can't remember what I put where.

I just planted two daylily seeds and will be very curious to see if they come up and make it through the winter. If my Symphony of Praise seeds germinate in the next week, also, I'm going to pop those in the ground as well.
I figure that when a seed pod pops open, they fall on the ground, so nature does it.
Nancy, I just planted tiger lilies from an exchange and didn't know about the disease. Gak!!! Hopefully it won't be an issue
