i think I am going to order another tomentosa. The one I had died after one year summer,didn't make it through the winter. Where does it do best, partial shade, does it need lots of water? I don't know if it died from a cold spell or if it didn't get enough water in the winter. I have not had any success moving the Pipevine cats from my Calico to my Frimbrata, probably because I don't have enough. However, a couple weeks ago, I found a good size Pipevine on my Calico. It was eating new growth that had come back from the Polys devouring it. I watched it for about a week and I think it was probably big enough to go into chrysalis. Then yesterday a friend who has the Pelican pipevine showed me a picture of one on her vine. I am wondering if they are beginning to adapt to the tropical vines if they get new growth. I would love for it to be true as they are having a hard time in my yard.

Insecticidal soaps usually work on scale. Be sure you continue to spray as directed on the bottle. I think you will have to do multiple sprays, as new eggs hatch out, to catch all the yuckies.

Are you talking about the aphids on the flower bud? Aphids (which love the newest, most succulent growth of plants) excrete a sweet substance (called honey dew) that ants love. The ants are eating the aphids, they are massaging them so that they will produce more honey dew. They will also protect their aphids from other insects. Gently squish the aphids to get rid of them, or spray them with the hose.
