Last year, not knowing what CAR looked like, I made a rookie mistake and didn't do anything about it on my 2 yr old Jonafree tree. Big mistake! After becoming severely infected, it dropped almost all of it's leaves early and only put on about 6' of new shoot growth all season. Educate yourself as best you can as fast as you can if you like your trees as much as I like mine. There is an overwhelming wealth on the web, start by Googling 'cedar-apple rust. Good Luck! My Wagner's Caterpillars of Eastern North America lists two asparagus feeders, the Small Purplish Gray (Iridopsis humaria) and the Cabbage Looper (Trichoplusia ni) but again this is the eastern book and I see your location is in Vancouver, BC so this may not help at all... I have always had to pick off small single black eggs in the spring--never been able to pin down exactly what they were but I still did not think they would taste any better steamed and with a bit of butter and lemon. good luck

Some sort of moth or butterfly likely laid eggs on the leaves; they hatched and the caterpillars that result roll up in the leaves for protection and to eat their fill. Did you unroll any of the leaves to see what was hiding inside?

frost damage ... look to the newest leaves.. near the center ... i bet they are fine ... i would give it a few more weeks ... let the plant try to hide them ... and then rip out as few as possible.. to make it look better ... just slide your hand down the petiole.. and pull it out ... you might be surprised how few need come out ... do keep in mind.. as long as they stay green... they are doing there job ... feeding the plant .. so dont go in there.. and rip off half the leaves ... or do it now.. what the heck .. throw them on the driveway when you are done ken
