Tomato Soup - Old Recipe

I've been canning tomato soup for several years and it calls for a mixture of butter and flour for thickening. Reading that you are not supposed to add oil OR flour, is there a substitute I could use? My family LOVES this soup and I have never had a problem with it. It is pressure canned.

Any help before I start this year's batches would be appreciated.
