Why would anyone spend money on these things?

They are gorgeous and most are very easy to grow.

If you kill off hostas then you have to pinpoint the problem. There are very few things that will kill them. Too much sun, too much shade, too dry, too wet, competitionn chemicals and pests/animals/insects. Some varieties can be difficult to keep. Researching varieties before purchase helps in avoiding these. Some varieties grow super slow and if you have one or more of the problems listed above then that can make the hosta grow even slower or even get smaller each year. Hosta Virus X(HVX) is something else you should learn about because it is highly contagious and it can make a beautiful hosta ugly forever.

Almost all of my hostas grow great for me but I have a hard time growing astilbe and heucheras. I know the reason for this. Silver Maple surface roots. They can choke out things plus they suck up much of the moisture. So I avoid adding those perennials and I give additional water.
