Steeping spicing...how long is too long

I make spiced peaches by steeping cinnamon sticks & whole cloves in my extra light syrup (& fruit fresh) when I can peaches. I usually steep the spices in the syrup for about 10 minutes and then add the cinnamon & cloves to the jars. This sometimes leaves discolorations on the fruit pieces they come in contact with. I was wondering what is the longest amount of time I can steep the spices in the syrup?

Also, what other whole spices have you tried spicing fruits with?
