Jan, I have my key lime seedling in the ground and it's doing good. Gets occasional mouldy white stuff on new leaves that I just trim off. On the other hand, your Lemon seeds are sending up 2 nice seedlings that I have in a pot. I actually upgraded their pot size last month. Secret?? I have none. My variegated Pink Lemon that I had in a large planter since last spring just bit the dust. So I have NO answers, just hope I get lucky with one cirtus or the other!

Hi Jan, cindeea, and Barb,

I see that all three of you live in zone 10. I can't imagine why you don't have your limes in the ground. Two and a half years ago I gave my son, who lives in Cape Coral, a Key Lime seedling that is so large now that he said it is just loaded with fruit. Because I live in zone 9a, I have to protect mine and have it growing as an understory plant under an oak tree . Even in a colder area it is still better to grow it in the ground and protect it from freezes when necessary. I also have a 1 1/2 year old variegated pink lemon tree in the ground in a less protected area and it is growing just fine even without cold protection. That one surprised me about being more cold tolerant that what the tag said.

So, the "secret" is to plant it in the ground--then just watch it grow!

I was going to put the key lime in the ground but I wanted to wait for the key lime tree to get little bigger.

I am going to put the key lime in the ground when it gets cooler.

I have had lousy luck with Key Limes. I had a thornless one that I had in a container for a few years, then planted in the ground. It always looked sickly, and rarely produced a fruit. I finally dug it up and tossed it. My current thorny ones are in the ground, and they are by far the ugliest of my nearly 50 citrus. Everything affects them, greasy spot, scab, miners, aphids - yet my other varieties are doing well.

Mine are in full sun, get regular fertilizers and are sprayed/drenched to control diseases. Still they mock me(G).

My lime has been in a pot for three years now. I wanted the look of a big, full citrus growing in a huge pot at the doorway, but alas, it looks bad too.

I want to put the poor guy in the ground, but I don't have a ton of yard space. Does a lime tree (ours is keffir) get as big as an orange?

I've had one in a pot in the screen enclosure right next to my blueberries for at least a year now. It's in good shape and giving me limes. In fact I just made a dessert with the juice. It was a 1 gallon from HD. I'm happy with it, but I'm still a newbee to fruit.

Hey Marion...how's your var. pink Lemon? I think you got yours about the same time I got mine. Mine bit the dust BIG TIME. Your's doing ok?

I've had my key lime for 7 years, and just last year I got about 20 fruits. Lots of blooms this year, no fruit. I still think it's pretty. I'm guessing mine is a bush type, because it refuses to be a tree.

Cindee it's right next to the key lime and doing OK it's lost some leaves on the botton but it's producing.

I have a mexican lime tree in a 15 gallon pot. Just moved it from a 7 gallon a couple months ago. The plant itself is about 4' tall and 4'wide. Very beautiful blooms profusely and makes more limes than the tree can hold if I don't pick some of them off. I am using miracle grow moisture control garden soil and fertilize every 3 mo. with a slow release citrus fertilizer. My tree doubled in size in only one season. I bought my lime at home depot. It is january in houston now and my tree is still blooming and fruiting.
