Dwarf Potted Key Lime

Any idea when can I expect this to set fruit.

I received this in October 2011 and it was considerably smaller than it is now, it is now 14 inches tall. I feed with Dr. Earth Citrus Tree fertilizer every 2 weeks and water when top inch or two are dry. I have no idea how old it was when I got it as Guerneys description did not say. It gets 4-5 hours of sun per day (when the sun is out of course). I am a newbie when it comes to fruit trees.

I replied to your other topic which would apply to this one as well.

something else I meant to add to the other post was I wonder if these trees from Gurney's are rooted cuttings.

I don't know-wouldn't be surprised if they were. probably never get any fruit :(

SuperThrive's expensive and there's no clear consensus on whether or not it even does anything. I'd rather try something else. Trunks still green under the bark but it looks like it might be loosing some of the newer branches.

I agree with Citrange on this. Way too large a pot, and not a good potting medium. I would search for "511 mix" on our forum for a great container potting medium. Or, if you can find it in your area, Farfad Professional Heavy potting mix (again, search our Forum for "Farfad" to get the best recommendations for this pre-packaged mix). I would do this right away, your little tree is failing rapidly. The good news, is citrus are very resilient, so if you can get this tree potted up in a much smaller pot, about 1/2 the size you currently have it potted in, and in about 2 or 3 weeks, after it has settled down a bit, start fertilizing with DynaGro Foliage Pro, you should start to see a come back. Melanie, Thanks. I've been surfing around looking at ideas to help him deal. Do you re-pot often? Do you prune roots? I'm guessing my pot is probably 20-24 inches across. I put him right in there when I got him. Decided to go with a larger pot from day one, because I'm scared to re-pot him. Mostly, I'm afraid of the thorns. I'm hoping to keep him from getting any taller than about six feet so the majority of his leaves are at the height of my South windows for winter. I'm sure I'm concerned about this far too early, but eventually I will need to re-pot him and maybe prune some roots. Thanks for the info, Much Obliged. dave

hovegator, I noticed you're in NorCal. Where in NorCal are you? Do you happen to know your Sunset zone (see the Western Sunset book)? Depending on where you are citrus can do very well in your area. I'm not familiar with growing citrus in pots, but I would imagine they should do well enough in your climate. I would suggest a trip to a local nursery that knows about citrus (not the box type stores) and get some information about planting them in your area. I've seen many citrus trees thrive in large pots / 1/2 barrels and left outside. Depending on how cold it gets in your area, you may want to also consider a more cold hardy citrus like mandarin instead of lime. Lali

It being a rooted cutting isn't a problem at all.

It could probably use more sun (4-5 hours isn't really enough), and its probably going to need to get a bit bigger before you see fruit.

Guerneys told me it was 2 years old when shipped in oct 2011 so maybe next year it will fruit.As well as the dwarf meyers lemon.

John is right! You can get fruit on cuttings with ease. I make cuttings all the time and will get fruit even on a 4 inch high cutting.
In fact, in some cases, I much more prefer cuttings for potted citrus.

It will fruit in less time than that if you give it what John suggests.

The cuttings though will eventually take on full form and not be dwarf though correct? So they will have to end up in the ground at some point?
