Thanks for all the great replies! I inherited the sedums when I bought the house 3.5 years ago, so I don't know how old they are. I have cleared out the flower beds, spaced them out, and mulched them, so they should have more room. They are in good soil, where they get a lot of late sunshine and rain. I like them as they are popular with bees and butterflies when in bloom. Just last night I was cutting Peony cages to make one really big cage for a Peony, and I may do the same for these. Or maybe devise a nice little arrangement with poles and string to hold them up off the walkway. vince

Broccoli seedlings get leggy when they are grown at temperatures warmer than what is ideal for them and/or when grown too far from the lights or a combination of both. They have a tendency to get leggy because most humans grow them at an indoor temperature that feels good to us humans but which feels hot to the cole crops. While most seedlings grow fine at 60 to 65 degrees, I've found broccoli does better if grown at 50-55 degrees. Since my seed-starting room stays warmer than that, I move broccoli outside the day it pops up out of the soil-less mix, and then move it back indoors at night. Keeping it outside in generally cooler temperatures (well, except for this year when it has gotten too hot too early ) helps prevent the legginess. Also, having the light 2 to 3" away encourages legginess. I keep the lights so close to the plants that you can't stick your finger between the light and the tallest plant, so maybe 1/4" away or less. That helps keep down the legginess too. You can repot them deeper and they'll be fine, but do try to get them cooler air or they'll keep growing too fast and stretching because of the "heat". To a lesser extent cauliflower is the same way and so is cabbage, although it seems to me that cabbage doesn't stretch as much as broccoli does under identical conditions. I don't start many non-cole crops in the same flat as broccoli because of the cole crops' need for cooler temps, but lettuce likes the cooler temps too so I often seed them in the same flat as the broc. I try to put broccoli plants in the ground when they have 3 to 5 leaves, which is about when they're 3 to 5" tall. If you hold them in containers longer than that, they often bolt not long after they're transplanted, or they stunt or stall, or they look fine but give you buttonheads. Broccoli is really a garden diva and wants everything 'just so'.

Hi Jay, To answer your questions: When can I expect true leaves to appear? Your first ones should be appearing any time now, probably in the next three or four days. (You might be able to see them starting if you look in the angle where the two cotyledon leaves meet.) Do these look "too leggy"? ... It's not too late for me to re-seed. and When should I pot up? They do look like they could be a bit leggy, but I wouldn't be too concerned about that at this time, since you will pot up when they have their second set of true leaves. Just plant them deep when you pot up. And to what size pots? I use 3" "Cowpots î" and they carry through just fine to 6 - 8 weeks when I put them in the garden (actually, they last until 10 or more weeks if I'm late getting them out because of cold weather like last year or other issues.) When do I start using fertilizer? What kind? Don't. They should be fine with just what is in a quality soilless seed starting medium and then a good soilless growing medium. (Don't get one that says soil, it is not for use in pots and says so on the bag. It's too heavy and does not drain well enough for pots.) When I do pot up, should I bury them deep like I normally do when transplanting into the garden? Yes. Some people pot up several times. I prefer to do it a single time, partly because of the number of plants I grow, and partly because I want a plant at 6-8 weeks that is 8-12" tall. Plants that are younger seem to adapt to hardening off much better than larger older ones. I have tried both and the smaller ones usually catch up and even pass the larger plants in short order. I have to agree with MaryJo... since this is the wintersowing forum, I thought the OP was about wintersowing, not indoor growing. So to clarify on my earlier statement, and Emerogorks question of if I have tried it... Yes, with indoor growing, I have replanted seedlings deeper, with mixed success. Some plants seem ok with it, some of them not so much. However, with wintersown containers, I have not done so, for fear of rotting out the stems- because of the way wintersowing works, one should not be getting spindly plants, and because of the general dampness and cold/thaw process of wintersowing. But you might have better luck getting your questions answered over in the indoor gardening forum, particularly the container gardening or growing under lights sections.
