Experimenting with leggy seedlings

I thought of this two years ago, tried it last year, and now really wonder about its practice.

Some seedlings get leggy quickly, and I have started to test an idea. This was met with a modicum of success last year now I am going to take it more seriously.

When I set a few trays of seeds this year, I used 1/3 to 1/2 of the soil instead of filling the pots. When they became leggy (1" - 1 1/2 ") I add dry soil to help support them.

This is similar to growing tomatoes, the soil is right up to the leaves, but please, this is not a discussion about tomatoes.

I then water the soil and it packs down. I added more soil until wet soil goes right up the stem. They are allowed to drain fully. I now have short plants at ground level and they look healthy. How they fare a week, a month, from now remains to be determined.

I wonder how may others may have done this and what to expect. How much success have you had?
