Does anyone else find this annoying?

Ok, now this might be getting nitpicky but I just need to let it out. Let the "venting" begin... (oh dear have I been using the pressure canner too much lately?)

I'm getting really, REALLY sick of reading that slogan Ball had printed on the lids this year. "Crafted for quality - sealed for freshness" Arrrgh! After processing pickles, sweet pickles, beans, cherries, berries, jams, jellies, salsa, and more tomatoes than I care to think of at this point I don't even want to think about having to read it all winter! AND canning season isn't anywhere near over!! Granted it's a cutsie-poo slogan for gift jars and stuff, but come on! Enough is enough! At least give me the opportunity to choose NOT to use it. I truely believe my dad's favorite saying has been proven once again... "People who invent things should be forced to use them." It sure would save a lot of headaches.

I told you it was nitpicky! Isn't it funny how the littlest things can can be big annoyances?

I guess I must have gotten last years lids - since none of mine say that.

Yeah, it is irritating. Especially when the quality of the lids has declined IMO.

I have just been covering it up with my Sharpie marker when I label the jars. Write bigger. ;)

Hi, Nancy: I knew at link was to chimeras. It's was because 'Pony Ride,' 'Circus Boy' and 'Pixie Runaround (Sport)' look identical (even the foliage) that I was questioning them. Healthy-looking plants, though. I collected old photos and postcards of German Shorthaired Pointers for the book I am writing. I used to send emails to people who id'd the wrong breed as Shorthairs and, like Jen, several have become really good "friends" and still send me scans to help them get the right doggie id which = more $$$ :-) I was more irked with those who identify fantasies as chimeras. One seller labelled a couple of trailers as "chimeras" but in the body of the auction gave the description with the blooms correctly id'd as "fantasy." What made me even think about this was a newbie friend who didn't know any better and bought a "chimera" from someone on eBay; it was a fantasy. To give this seller credit, she honestly didn't know the terms aren't interchangeable and was appreciative when I emailed her ~ nicely :-) ~ and sent her to the AVSA web site with the names of some chimeras and some fantasies so she could see the difference. She tried to refund the $$ but my friend was so happy with the plant she refused it. Back to potting up my trailers! Enjoy the weekend. Linda

If your emitters are failing: 1. Keep your drip heads above your mulch to keep the dirt out. 2. If it is a new system, flush the lines before installing the dripper heads. I have installed about 1000' of 1/2" tubing and another 1500' of 1/4" tubing to my approximately 800 dripper heads. A rather large system on four zones. Three years ago (first year), I had two dozen or so failures, but I didn't keep the heads off the ground. Now I do, and failures do not occur. Then again, I also switched manufacturers for the replacements, but the original ones not replaced are still doing fine. I use 1/2, 1, and 2 gph drippers, they all work equally well. I also had used a soaker hose, the 1/4" kind with a hole every foot or so. NOT!!! The holes clog and was totally ineffectual. I pulled almost all of it out, I have a few sections that are still working, but they are only watering very xeric plants that get enough water if even 2/3 of the holes were clogged. My system uses cistern water (10,000 gal tank buried in the front yard, water pulled out with a shallow-well pump), so hardness isn't a problem. The pump puts out 30-60 psi, I do not reduce it, and the only time an emitter has blown off it has been because of operator error. If you are using well water, then you may be getting sand and junk inside your lines clogging your emitters. Install a filter and you should be in business. Incidentally, I live at 7000' just east of Albuquerque, and the area around my house looks like a dense jungle of nothing but native plants with penstemons (at least 8 varieties), coneflower, chocolate flower, hyssops, yarrow, yucca, golden currant, sand cherry, salvias, thymes (non-native, but I wanted the groundcover), sumacs, and at least 20 other native species, all irrigated by emitters. Firefox with the adblock, noscript and flashblock extensions will eliminate any and all pop-up problems you might have. Gardenweb won't allow me to link directly to the pages the extensions are found on; however, if you perform a search here you will easily find them. Apart from learning how to manage extensions and the occasional poorly coded website (in that case, you may be stuck opening an internet explorer window) there is little to no learning curve in using firefox. The icons are so similar that I often don't really notice which browser I'm using if I'm using someone else's computer. Ryan

I agree that it's probably to get an idea of how realistic the sellers are, how aware they are of the market conditions, etc., so that the agent can either let them down gently if they're overly optimistic or cheer them up with a "you can expect to get more than you think!" as well as see if they need the clue-by-four upside the head. (They do the same thing on Antiques Roadshow. :-)) As for "do you want a quick sale", I think that's a pretty reasonable question. Some people don't really need to sell in any particular timeframe, so can afford to hold out for a certain price, and the agent needs to know that.

I sharpie my lids too and I want as little design on them as possible so I don't have to 'read around' distractions to find out what I am eating.

Which is why I designed round labels that cover the lid. Only my "logo" to see and no labels to wash off jars.

Same here, I use my own labels and cover things up. Looks cute/nice for giving away too.

I agree that is a good idea ladies, but we aren't exactly recycling those materials where we should be obliged to figure out ways to cover them up so we can mark on them. The product designer should be familiar enough with his/her product to know people who can also mark the contents and dates on their finished product. Their little logos and pictures are just a pain in the butt I am likely to avoid if I can.

I only make labels for jams and gifty stuff.
My basics (beans, carrots, tomatoes) just get a big "2010".

Are you saying that you make and use a full-sized, free-floating label that sits between the lid and the ring..... or is the label stick-on?

I buy round labels that stick to the lid only.
2" and 2 1/2".
Since the lid does not get reused, there's no scrubbing it off later!

The place I buy from has downloadable templates for all of their labels and then I can use whatever font I like and take photos or use free clip art from the web.

A little something extra I have done for gifts is use business card stock and print what's in the jar and how to cook/use it. I then punch a hole in the corner and tie it to the jar with a bow. Ribbon or raffia work well.

For example, on my peach pie filling jars, the business card says Peach Pie Filling (and I include a cute clip art peach) and the instructions to simply pour the contents into an 8" pie shell, vent the top crust or make a lattice and bake at 350 until crust is brown and pie is bubbly.

On my corn chowder, I include the instructions to add cream and any optional ingredient such as 1/3 cup of cheese, leftover chicken, salmon, lobster, or almost any leftover seafood.

Does anyone else find this annoying?
