Is a Tropicana orange enough? It is a very hardy, heavy blooming rose. Be sure it (or any you choose) is on fortuniana root stock.

Thank you pawsnplants, the fact that I have to get it on Fort. is sort of limiting, I get my roses usually from K & M Roses, they have a good selection on Fort........... Tropicana will prob. be one I get..... I'm also thinking Octoberfest, Hot Cocoa,Fragrant Cloud, Granada, Rio Samba, and Cl. America.... what do you have that does well? I posted here on the Fla. Forum, hoping more rose-folks would chime in... I also posted on the Rose Forum and had several responses but they were from up north also Calif., and some of the suggestions are for those areas and not for here, our climate is sure different....... I do have Livin' Easy and Just Joey and they are not very happy, JULIA CHILD does very well here but she is yellow... and I want orange, to set off all the other colors ..I'll prob. get another JULIA anyway..... thanx, sally

I have Hot Cocoa on Fort. and I like it, but it is not orange. It is more a brick red or rusty brown color. It gets blackspot but is very vigorous. The leaves are dark green and contrast nicely with the blooms.

Thank you amberroses, Hot Cocoa was on my list, but I plan on getting the roses from K & M and I don't think they carry that one..... glad you responded because I want input from folks in this area if possible, I also posted on the Rose Forum and lots of people answered but they are mostly from Calif. or up north and the roses mostly are not suited for here... I am thinking also of getting Cl. America, Granada, Octoberfest, Rio Samba, and Tropicana.... do you have these and if so how do they do for you ?? I really love my Julia Child and plan on getting another, she is a gorgeous yellow and blooms great and little BS... but I have my heart set on some orange..... thanks, sally

Have you seen the Chihuly rose? It changes color. It varies from pink, to yellow, to orange. It is very glowy like a sunset.

Just Joey was one of my favorites. Tropicana was my best bloomer.

I have a Perfect Moment rose that does very well. It is a blend of orange, red, and yellow. If heavily pruned occasionally, it blooms heavily. It is susceptible to black spot though, and is VERY thorny. Nevertheless, it is a gorgeous bush when in full bloom and is kept healthy by dead heading and pruning out diseased parts. It in on the south side of and against the house - full sun all day.

I should mention all of these mentioned get blackspot in Florida I think. Some old garden roses get less blackspot, but I am not aware of any orange ones.

Thanks for all the input, I sure need it, and you folks are coming thru'...... I can live with some BS, but not where it defoliates the plant... I am trying to go all-organic and am keeping everything heavily fed and mulched, and I do think it makes a difference, I have not sprayed this year at all.. so far.... I am watching each plant closely, and plan on SPing Scentsational, I love the bloom-scent but it is mostly defoliated, and there are several others on the borderline.... I do have some OGRs, and they get less BS, but they also are not heavy bloomers and are not bright, they are more subdued colors, I am tired of pale pinks and whites and reds, that's why I want some really bright oranges to liven up the place...... and Julia Child is gorgeous and hardly any BS and she blooms her little head off ! but she's not orange..... oh my ! I Googled Chihuly and he is gorgeous, I do think K & M carries it, so he goes on my List .. Thanx amberroses.... I will look into Perfect Moment, it is new to me, thanx pawsnplants... I do have Just Joey but am not impressed with his performance, yet.... and I plan on getting Tropicana, thanxs coffeemom... you folks are great ! My Tropicana lives in Western N.C. now, in my sister's yard. It was really struggling. Is very healthy and happy in the mountains. :0)

Thank you tropicalfreak, Tropicana is a gorgeous rose, I have it on my long-list but not on my short-list ! ! some folks really like it but apparently it is susceptible to BS, and I'm trying to cut down on that ! I am going to get another Julia Child, maybe 2 of her.... I love the one I have and she never gets BS in my no-spray garden, and she pumps out the blooms.... also I think I will get Rio Samba also Cl. America.... from K&M Roses........ and from Chamblee's I think I'll order Pat Austin, Benjamin Britten, Sophy's Rose, and Maggie... maybe someone growing these can comment? how do they do for you ? You will love Maggie. She blooms alot and is fairly healthy for my conditions. Her blooms are large and magenta in color. Remember the crayola crayon, magenta? Just like that. Lots of petals that can be quartered and oh my goodness, the SCENT, fabulous.

I think you are doing the right thing in getting Austins for your orange additions. All things considered, my Graham Thomas, Abraham Darby and Heritage do quite well here. All are in large pots, on the wrong rootstock and get too much shade. Under better conditions, I think they could really do great.

FYI, Dr Manners has said somewhere that they have their Austins in Lakeland on multi-flora (as are mine). He says that, on fortuniana, they become huge monsters with fewer blooms on the very tops of the canes. However, I am still interested in trying one or two. Perhaps they would be better bloomers if pegged down.

Did you know that Cool Roses in S Florida is licensed to graft Austins onto fort? They are hard to reach. Perhaps you will have luck though. They are supposed to have other varieties not listed on the site.

Tuscan Sun is a very healthy orange-ish rose. Won Floribunda of the year award a few years ago. Looks healthy in the neighbors mostly neglected yard.

I really like Hot Cocoa. Not orange, but still a rather interesting brick color.

Pat Austin has really withstood the test of time in my garden...at least 4 years in the ground, it went through moments of neglect by busy Olya, and still is looking good!

Thanks folks, Does anyone have Westerland in their garden ? How does it do here ? I called K & M yesterday and ordered Rio Samba, another Julia Child, a Octoberfest, and Cl. America..... I talked to Daisy and then Jim called me back and will ship them next Monday.. the price has gone up to $20.... which is still cheaper than here in a Nursery, for grafted roses on Fort., the shipping brings it to abt. even in price.... well worth it to me..... I'm shovel-pruning enough plants that I can put maybe 8 - 10 new ones in and can use several climbers, so Westerland is a good prospect... and I will put the climbers at the back of the beds, it will give a privacy-screen for my new patio under the Guava tree..... thanx, sally

If you want a "true orange" rose, look no further than vavoom. Vavoom is the closest thing to a "true orange" rose that I've ever seen. I wish I could grow it here, but unfortunately I'm only in zone 5...
