It's your garden. I'd say try what you like and change it later if you don't like it. I mix varieties in my mess, er, I mean garden. I like the way it works. I have Hybrid Teas next to Portlands, next to Teas next to Austins. It gives me great pleasure, and other people seem to like it too. The point is to have fun, and make the environment more beautiful.

I don't think the mix of foliage will look odd in any way. I have all my OGRs and moderns mixed together and they look lovely! I think it's a pretty rose too and should look good anywhere you put it!

Why not?
If YOU like it, the most important condition is met, after all.
So, try it, and if you don't like it do something different.

That's what I have done. My rose garden is just 4 years old. I have HT's..I love them alot..but I fell in love with Austins..so I planted a Lady Emma..well she nodded really bad..So I didn't get anymore..then this year she is so spectacular I am sorry I didn't get more. Now I find I am falling in love with OGR. Mix it up..

I find that mixing old and modern roses can work quite well if you plant companion plants here and there which somehow helps to blend everything harmoniously, old or new.

I think a garden is more interesting if the plants that like the same conditions are mixed. For example my garden is mostly either part sun or part shade. My roses have commanded my only really sunny spot. However, because I love so many flowers, I have mixed in daylilies, irises and rose campion along with my tea roses, Buck roses and a few other hybrid teas and shrubs including a noisette climber on the arbor. I much perfer the cottage garden look. However you should try whatever design you like and so how it turns out. Enjoy your garden!

I love everyone's thinking on this! I received Tropicana as a gift and was nervous about putting it among my ogr's, but have put it in my new bed next to a bright electric red rose that may be some sort of Knockout (how I acquired that one is beyond me!), and they look fine together, quite a riot of color. Of course Tropicana is growing and blooming like crazy, and while not my favorite rose, this'll work!

I have had some very modern-looking roses look very out of place, however it was the color of the bloom (deep neon pink) that offended my eye, not the the glossy leaves. I do not grow just roses. Many perennials share space in my front garden rose beds, so foliage of all sorts jostles for sunlight.

Right now I have a very very very red rose that looks a bit out of place, but it is healthy and blooms well. Also Tom loves it. I tucked it in an out of the way corner and will let it stay.

Jeri - why do you say orange roses don't blend? Do you mean the color of the bloom doesn't blend with anything else, or what? Explain, please!

This may not be Jeri's answer but I'm in total agreement. Antique roses tend to have softer, more muted colors and the ones that are on the brighter side are in the pink range. How one would fit a really, really orange rose into that scheme is certainly beyond my capabilities.

I only place them by size and even then you never know what they will do and some usually get rearranged.
I never pay attention to color, but, Rosarium Utersen always clashes with everything. It's usually the first rose people notice because it really stands out, clashes with all my other roses, and is always covered in blooms. (Seems like I'm the only one who thinks it clashes or these people aren't paying attention.)
I would just avoid putting something like Lavender Lassie next to Rosarium Utersen because I did it and, no no no no no. Looked horrible.
By the way, I love all Kordes Roses, Robusta is a great rose.

I have to agree that modern orange roses do not go well with OGRs. They need to be placed carefully with white or yellow "buffers" between them and OGRs. One of the most satisfying color combinations I have is the tall and ungainly 'Harison's Yellow' in front of a maroon rhododendron with the regal purple 'Cardinal de Richelieu' in front of 'Harison's Yellow' and the early blooming 'Stelle d' Oro' yellow daylily at the feet of the Cardinal.

The worst color combination I accidently came up with was the beautiful red 'Frensham' next to the cerise pink 'Rosemary Rose'. I couldn't stand the combination and 'Rosemary Rose' was banished to the outback where it is still doing its thing along with the privet, poison ivy, and blackberries.

There was a time when I thought the foliage of Rugosas was unnatural looking near the OGRs. Once I discovered how indispensable they are to those who garden in zone 4, I changed my tune and now find my zone 4 garden has mostly Rugosa hybrids.

I have to say that I HAVE two Robusta's, in a mixed bed of modern shrubs and OGR's, one sitting next to a Cardinal de Richelieu and the other next to a F.J Grootendorst and an Alchymist. I hadn't thought either of them looked out of place, but then,no one has ever accused me of having taste!
