This is last night's sky on the West Coast. I was trying to get a shot of the cool lightning. So today I see Ricky's East Coast sunrise and I thought I'd give the night sky a little publicity.

I spent some time lying on the trampoline in our backyard last night after we finished working in the yard but I think I went in too early! It was stunning before but I am sorry I missed the sunset.

Thanks for the replies. Air circulation is definitely important, especially when temperatures begin to rise in the spring. The partial shade spot that I'm thinking of is against the west side of my garage, and air circulation may be more limiting here than the relative shade. A. columbiana (the straight species, at least) is surprisingly leaf spot-prone in cultivation, even when it's in nearly-ideal conditions. Many of the A. densiflora selections from NorCal (Howard McMinn, Harmony, Sentinel) do much better up here.

Kate, there are a lot of rhubarb brownie recipes on the web. I was thinking about them what you said about the chocolate. I was looking for something like my banana "brownie" recipe which uses white chocolate. Rather than reinventing the wheel, because I can't imagine a straight substitution of rhubarb for banana, I found a recipe along those lines, which I hope to make tonight or tomorrow. I'll let you know once I've gotten a good result (no need to waste more rhubarb!) Meantime, I had found a couple of custard recipes, and was trying to squeeze the makings between work-type stuff and dinner, the crustless one, but I was rushing, and when I saw that this recipe called for a crust, I didn't remember that I had a different one. They're very similar, so I think they have a common source, or one inspired the other. The crustless one reads like impossible pie. The crust one has half the flour. Anyway, I just made the crust one without the crust. This is the recipe. I scanted the sugar by a quarter and it's still quite sweet. Next time, I'll try 2/3 of what it says. I also measured the ingredients by eye, except the rhubarb. The custard is only two eggs worth, but it was sufficient, since the pint is just to hold together the rhubarb. Anyway, we think it's fantastic. Quick and easy and very rhubarby. The orange zest and juice just enhance it. It is a little wet crustless, since there's so much water in rhubarb. A nice crust to soak it up might be nice... contact your local county extension office.. and see if they recommend any action... like some local plague we dont know about.... welcome to the forums.. there are at least two other posts down the page addressing the same leaf issues.. to be very clear.. 99.9 % of your leaf is working just fine.. converting sunshine into energy ... there really is no reason you need to do anything other than kill every insect on the tree.. good and bad... its a deciduous tree.. it will lose these leaves in fall.. and you may never see this issue again.. or maybe in 10 years.. its just really nothing to worry about.. and odds are.. the bugs are already gone.. and if you do spray or something.. you are basically just polluting .. unless you can find and clearly ID a pest.. you should not do anything.... ive had mid summer hail storms just about denude maples trees.. and they can do do releaf.. there is going to be no long term harm to your trees.. for a few ugly leaves.. to come full circle. plagues come and go over the decades.. and so what.. dont panic... ken

Trochodendron aralioides (Wheel tree). Cool evergreen small tree and quite hardy, but prefers being planted on a slope out East where the weather is hotter. I had one that died possibly from Phytophthora. It doesn't seem to tolerate overly wet soils in summer. Apparently it is the only living species in the Genus (several are extinct).

Susie - can you crop just the colored section of the photo and enlarge? The colors are vivid at that point, but there's too much dark sky. I'll bet it looked even more powerful than the camera captured. One of these days they'll make a camera as good as the human eye!

I love both the sunrise and sunset photos.
I like the dark areas and the clouds at top around the intense colors in the sunset photo but as a professional photographer I know that cropping is in the eye of the beholder.
When I had exhibits I used to stand incognito and listen to peoples comments. Always amusing.

We that appreciate the beauty that is all around us are blessed. Many see it and keep going no big deal. We sometimes see a beautiful flower in our gardens that is just for our eyes. No one else see it. At that moment I feel special.
Life is so rich.

There's five or six shots of this in my camera, I just kept shooting as it got darker - really too late in the day for a good sunset pic, but the lightning would've made a striking photo. I'm not a photographer, so Denise and Ricky, your comments are helpful. I see something cool, pick up to camera and press the button. If I start playing around with the editing feature, which is so lame, I feel like it's a waste of time and I wanted to just get it posted. I got some shots with too much of the background scenery (which includes the property across the street from me - and the 4-Sale sign showing its 1.7 million price!)

Yes, Felix - I know just exactly what you mean. It's not corny. It's corn-doggy.
