2012 Color Trends: Natural Purples for Kitchen and Bath
Hot now: Purples swiped from dusky sunsets and wildflowers
This 2012 Color Trends series is about five hot color trends projected for the year. In particular I'll be showing you how to incorporate them into your kitchen and bath in a way that makes sense for your home.
This ideabook focuses on purple, one of my personal favorites. This year's color forecasts show the deep and pale purples you see at sunset and in wildflower fields, rather than the ones that show up in royal palaces. Purple is an easier color to work with than you'd expect, because it is such a natural shade. You find it in herbs and dusky horizons, vineyards and vegetable gardens.
If you've only considered purple a retro glam color, you're missing its rich subtleties. Consider this: colors that occur in nature, especially when paired with their natural neighbors, will work together in your home. Mother Nature is the finest designer anywhere!
My bedroom and bath will be painted a soft plum this year. Here are some ideas on how you might incorporate the purple color trend into your home.

If you don't want an entirely purple space, consider one section of your kitchen. This touch of plum might be just enough for your taste.
Deep purple paint beautifully complements the white cabinetry in this kitchen, and it also works well with maple, honey oak and even natural cherry.
Fabrics are a great way to introduce color to a kitchen. Here, a deep aubergine cushion covers a banquette and plays nicely with the room's white canvas.
Other textile opportunities include dish towels, oven mitts, window coverings and area rugs.

Waterfall Ruffle Shower Curtain
Adding color with textiles also works well in the bathroom. A shower curtain is an easy redo if you tire of this year's trend color. This shower curtain flirts with texture as well as color. Wouldn't it be fun for a teen girl or a bachelorette's bath?
Wallpaper offers the opportunity to introduce both color and pattern to a room. Here, the print blends with the tub and the wall below. A partial treatment allows for a traditional trimwork element in the room, which doesn't compete with the tub in front of it.
Bathroom Tile
This look is not for the faint of heart, nor the apathetic housekeeper. However, it is a stunningly dramatic tile to incorporate into a bath or kitchen project where you want to make a statement. I imagine this one covering a powder room wall.

Purple gets playful in this Italian vanity. Its curves and gloss impart a levity to the space. The wall mount adds to the lighthearted feel of the room, as does the coordinating racetrack-shaped mirror above. If you're a purple fan with a sense of whimsy, this could be a fun addition to your master bath.
