Grafted cherry tomato plant getting crazy groth -- maintenance?
Comments (13)I think it's plausible that a different rootstock might subtly affect how certain traits manifest. It might increase or decrease production or affect fruit size, texture (due to water differences), even flavor of fruit. We know that rootstocks can definitely affect the quantity and quality of foliage. Why not fruit? Yeah, genes are genes, but epigenetic influence can be significant, and a different rootstock does change the exposure of the scion to environmental factors having to do with nutrient/water uptake and circulation. While I'm sure that any effects that do exist would most likely be minor, it's not as though there's no plausible mechanism for the rootstock affecting things like taste, production of fruit, etc. I'm sure a lot of those possibilities will be studied if tomato grafting becomes more practiced commercially. I wonder whether there is a body of research on it in other countries that have practiced widespread grafting for much longer which is not available internationally because it's not in English. EDIT: Grafting effects on vegetable quality "Most reports on grafting suggest that changes in the scion are controlled by the rootstock through controlled uptake, synthesis, and translocation of water, minerals, and plant hormones[...]A few studies have explored how the scion is affected by mRNA and protein migrating from the rootstock. [Some researchers] showed that mRNA and [...] phloem proteins from the rootstock can migrate from the rootstock through the phloem to the scion and accumulate in the phloem and apical tissues. One of these mRNAs is a member of a gene family in which some the members are reported to be involved in apical meristem development[...] Another was shown to change leaf morphology of potato scion when grafted onto transgenic modified tomato rootstock. Tiedemannand Carstens-Behrens (1994) studied the phloem proteins that differed in cucumber (C. sativus) grafted on figleaf gourd (C. ficifolia) or on pumpkin (C. maxima). They found four proteins on sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis gels in grafted scions that do not appear in control plants but matched the rootstock phloem protein pattern. Two of the proteins match the phloem protein 1 and phloem protein 2 molecular weight of the rootstock. Ruiz-Medrano et al. (1999) suggest this migration is a novel mechanism likely used to integrate developmental and physiological processes on a whole-plant basis. The phloem proteins role may be in long-distance transport of RNA within plants[...]"...See MoreOverwhelmed with tomatoes (pic)
Comments (20)Hello Everyone, Thanks for the compliments!! I'm not officially organic, but have not used any chemicals this year and never use insecticides. I have used Daconil in the past but didn't this year. I started bagging fruit and will try some different non-chemical options this week which will include wearing a pear of latex gloves and taking care of them by hand. The latex glove method is not effective really (based on last year's experiance) but perhaps it will help with population control of stinkbugs in a small way. I essentially practiced succession planting by accident this year. Most of what I have been posting pictures of are the first few rows in the garden. I planted the rest about 10 days later and have begun to realize the bulk of fruit from those plants this week. Bradley and Arkansas Traveler are really starting to turn out fruit. I have not tasted Arkansas Traveler yet but can say that Bradley is a favorite this year. Jay...See MoreOverwhelmed about growing bush tomatoes
Comments (5)Thank you all so much! I'll take the advice and read up this winter and be ready for it all. Oh I had to look up what winter sowing was haha, that sounds like a great plan there. Our winters aren't the winters I grew up with, no solid weeks of snow and ice haha. I never know when to put my other plants outside. Early season varieties thank you! That sounds good, this plant we had.. we had to wait a very long time to get anything off it. I'll definitely use a bigger pot too. Romas, that's it! I remember now the sign saying that at the grocery store, thank you. Wow thanks all for the help, it's still overwhelming but I feel a bit more like I can narrow it down now just by picking some seeds or seedlings when the time comes. Thank you so much! This is exciting, we've never much liked what we can buy at the bigger stores either at the grocery store or plant versions to grow ourselves. Now to go read up more about winter sowing and check out the TGS link thanks! Oh about letting them sprawl, I'll have to read up on that too. We have a spot in the back yard that would be great for tomato plants to sprawl around. Hmmm more to read up on, thanks guys!...See MoreBlack cherry tomatoes take so long to get ripe!
