advice, please on blackberry jam recipe

I am fairly new to jamming and made the following recipe of blackberry jam. Since it doesn't address an actual cooking time, I consulted a book called "Perfect Preserves" by Walden. It said to boil a berry jam, after adding the sugar, until it sets; usually about 10 MINUTES, which I did, and then when it still wouldn't set, boiled it more. I couldn't get this jam to set for anything and have since consulted several other recipes for blackberry jam, which all seem to give a time of about 1 minute (vs. 10!) for boiling. Can anyone shed some light on why this jam didn't set? Thank you, Amy

The recipe I followed:

6 lb. blackberries

1/4 pint water

Rind and juice of 2 lemons

6 lb. sugar.

Simmer fruit and lemon until soft; stir in sugar and boil rapidly until set.

*This seems to be a fairly common recipe -I've seen it several places.
