Check your larger groceries. I found a gallon jug in a regular grocery store. Check health food or natural food stores, sometimes they sell in bulk.

Maine, like many other nor'eastern states, as far as I know has no Kroger. We have to deal with a limited amount of local chain stores here, Stop & Shop, and Shaws. The S&S here doesn't even offer frozen grapefuit juice, or even popular Dole pineapple juice in a frozen concentrate. About the only other big stores we have are Market Basket, which is also a small chain. The product distributors they use are not as well stocked with varied choices. Then, there is Walmart, but a super store Walmart is 60 miles away, and the only other source for a few items not seen in our area. About all you can do is check web sites for the markets and see if they list, or can get wine vinegar. Sometimes they can, but most times they are just too lazy to deal with a single item. Its not likethe 'mom and pops' stores from yesteryear, where you placed your orders (everything) long ahead of time and they show up weeks and months later, provided they can be found by the store owners. Be sure that the wine vinegar is 5% acidity, anything less, may cause spoilage or illness if its on the low side.

Hmm, I wonder if there's a restaurant supply company in your area that does a bit of retail business as well? Might be worth a couple of phone calls. And even if it doesn't pan out, it may put the idea in someone's head for the future.

Or, by any chance is there a smallish restaurant where you're a "regular"? If so, they may be willing to do you a favor and add a gallon or two of vinegar to their next order. Generally speaking, smaller businesses are more customer service focused and are better equipped to handle special requests. Can't hurt to try.

I don't know about your area, but, I pick up bulk items at a restaurant supply store about 30 miles away from here.

Whoops, sorry, misread the question! I have regular white vinegar in gallons, not white wine vinegar. Duh.

I'm thinking if you would be happy with rice wine vinegar (and if it's acidic enough), you might try a restaurant supply store that specializes in supplying Asian restaurants. Sushi takes HUGE amounts of vinegar to make, and good sushi cooks start with plain rice wine vinegar and season it themselves. Actually, seasoned rice wine vinegar, if that's all you can find, is probably a reasonable subsitute in many recipes if it's acidic enough. "Seasoned" means a very small amount of sugar and salt are added, just enough to take the edge off the vinegar. You'd want to keep in mind that there's already some sugar and salt in your vinegar. But if you have a Japanese or Thai restaurant in your town that serves sushi, they're getting their vinegar from somewhere and probably in gallons. A lot of Asian markets might have it, too, depending on the size of your town.

Amazon offers 2 1-gallons of Roland Seasoned Rice Wine Vinegar for $20.50 with free shipping, but the vinegar is only 4.5% acidity.

Rice wine vinegar is sometimes sweetened, seasoned, or has lower acidty. Love it when picking jicima and a few other cruncy things for California rolls.
