Oxo Salad Spinner

Got one of these neat spinners last summer, as I had planned to grow a lot of leaf lettuce. It does a great job in removing most all rinse water from the leaves. It nearly dries the leaves to a point where they have very little moisture left on the surface. Afterwards, I pack the greens in a big 2 gallon zipper bags and they usually last about 4-5 days without going totally limp. Since the water is spun out, I figured why not do the same with blanched peas, string beans, and even broccoli crowns. It has proven its worth there too. I spin it about 30 seconds and most all the residual water flies off. The blanched veggies get placed in a big clean bath towel to absorb any further water. Then the veggies get bagged, and into the freezer. The result is the veggies that have very little water left on their surfaces, and are easy to seperate when needed. Placing the blanched veggies on flat cookie sheets in the freezer just isn't a good option if you are dealing with 20 pounds of broccoli in one big batch.

Just bought the Kitchen Aid pump-style salad spinner at Costco and I love it. I find the segments useful for cleaning just enough fresh veggies for a salad for two in one operation. It does a great job spinning the lettuce dry and I've had no difficulty with the spinning process. I guess it helps to be sure the inner bowl is set properly on the protrusion at the bottom of the outer bowl. I like the fact that I can store leftover salad in the outer bowl. It came with a cover for the pump hole so the top is well closed for refrigeration. I've been looking for a good salad spinner for long time and previously purchased an OXO collapsible salad spinner for its compactness but it did a terrible job drying the lettuce so I returned it. At long last, I have a salad spinner that does the job and then some.

Sally, yours is an OXO. They are so big that they are awkward to store. I do hope I use it enough to justify the space it takes up. I will not stick it in the dishwasher until or unles someone says it's OK. About the sewing machine: I actually just got a Kenmore model 16221. I sold the predecessor to this model when I worked at Sears so I know it well. It has a horizontal drop in bobbin, needle threader, and thread slicer. It came with more presser feel and stitch selections than I will ever use. It is so quiet and smooth! Kenmore machines are made by Janome so I'm sure the quality is acceptable. I HATE the presser foot release lever.... there isn't very much to it. Nothing to really grab hold of. The motor is smooth and I like that. I may not keep it though. I REALLY want an old fashioned Singer Featherlight or something similar. Something metal (and beautiful) that can survive me! The Kenmore is plain white... not pretty and I know it will smash to pieces the first time I tumble it across the room!

I love OXO products. Everything I've purchased by them has been of consistently high quality and works flawlessly. Their serrated peeler is hands-down my favorite peeler that I always reach for and will drag out of the DW and wash by hand rather than use a different one.

I have a very old salad spinner that is very much like this one, but mine is so old that it is no longer made. I kept hoping it would die so that I could get a new one, but it refuses, and so I continue to use it. Now I am beginning to like it, partly because it has a hand crank instead of a button to push. I can get the lettuce/spinach spinning very fast, but I do believe that the pillow case in the yard is the best. At my parent's house, I would give the pillow case to my niece's husband, so that he would have something to do while I was cooking. I have only used red palm oil when making fish, and I decided that I prefer avocado oil. Lars

My spinner (the larger model) is getting used also for the blanched and frozen waxed beans too. Its nice to fill a gallon bag, freeze, and then one 'whack' they are all loose inside gain. Sometimes my spinner gets 'out of track', and will sieze up while I push, but its ony if its heavy with stuff, like lots of blanched broccoli. I cut about 6 inches back from the head bases of the stems below the heads and slice these into 1/2 inch disks. They get an extra 30 second blanch and are all seperated flowerettes get bagged together. Right now, I picked a few tiny flowerettes and added them to my leaf lettuce along with some pickling cukes and a few radishes. All was enjoyed with my fat free, calorie free salad dressing. I had to tone the dressing down a little as the vinegar was a bit much. I jus added some more dried tomato powder and a dash of Splenda and that brought it up to a decent French type dressing. Have enough lettuce greens for about 6 whole meals of just salads alone. Where's those tomatoes??

I have the big one too and love it!

Sure is a great, productive way to take out your aggressions as well. :-)

I haven't tried it on chunkier veggies but sure will now.

I have a friend who is looking for a spinner made of metal and not plastic. She wants to spin cooked hamburger to reduce the amount of fat in it. I found one made of stainless steel but the basket inside was plastic. Anyone know a source? --Ilene

How about de-fatting the ground beef using the washer's spin-cycle? You'll have to heap the ground beef onto layers of cheesecloth and tie them up into tight bundles. The clean-up would be easy too. :)

Defatting ground beef. No, its done at grinding time using lean cuts, or drained off after cooking. Spinning meat with its fat contains will not seperate, as both are solids and have nearly similar densities. On the other hand, milk is seperated from its heavier and fatty cream, as both are in the same liquid. About all you can do for a metal spinner would be to find a commercial device that is made to handle a few hundred (or thousands) of pounds of washed greens.
