It sounds so pretty, I'm sorry it was broken. I have cats therefore I have nothing pretty. ANyway can't it be fixed?

I have cats too - but they are all inside. So, it really vexes me when my neighbor's cat comes into my fenced-in yard.

Unfortunately, no - I tried filling it with water thinking maybe a slow drip would be 'okay'...it all just dribbled out. It has about 1000 cracks in it and broken, chipped glass everywhere. Darn it.

Thrift stores often carry gorgeous huge handpainted plates which work great.

First, don't throw it away! It will make a lovely bird feeder, once you rinse away any loose bits of glass, etc, so that it is safe. After that, try Plow & Hearth online, and Gardener's Supply. Also, Country Door, Tender Heart, and Country House often have decorative birdbaths.

My cats are inside too. Can you fix it with the clear caulk they use to seal plumbing joints.

On the other hand, have you checked out the bird baths some have made and posted on the Garden Junk forum? You could build a crystal bird bath that would be the major sparkle in your garden! cora

Also maybe take it to a stained glass artist, maybe they can fix it or make you a new one. I am so sorry, I know how you feel when something you love gets broke.

I had cats for years, but they were house cats too. I hated it when the neighbors cats pooped in my flower beds. I hate it now when other peoples dogs poop in my grass. It's just nervey, they walk them on a leash and let them poop in my yard. Walk them around in your own yard.

Oh, I don't blame you, Katkin. Letting your animals trash someone else's yard is the height of rudeness! I walk my dog all over the neighborhood, but never without a plastic bag, in case he goes somewhere. I even pick it up from the public easement. Who wants to step in it? I use a scooper in my own backyard, too. No surprises for me early in the morning, thanks!

I have four cats who are all indoor animals. The average life expectancy of an outdoor cat is two years! TWO. They SHOULD live between 15 and 20, easily. For their own safety, they belong inside. My animals are MY responsibility, just like my children were, and they have to respect my neighbors.

Oh, yeah...the garden junk forum would have some good ideas on birdbaths, I'll bet! I keep forgetting to check them out regularly. They are so creative! I almost always see SOMETHING I like.

My favorite is a concrete one from Wally world. Nice slight degree of drop into the bath for the birds. Its heavy though, but in hurricanes it doesn't move.

I'm sorry to hear about your birdbath - it sounded gorgeous. I LOVE stained glass.

A concrete one wouldn't get knocked over by the average sized cat - and you could mosaic tile it and add sparkley bits of glass, too. You could certainly make it very pretty.

I've never had a neighborhood cat wreck any of my garden stuff. But, boy the raccoons sure do a number... they've destroyed my pond and then they had their way with my cute fountain in the side yard. Tipped it over and smashed it to bits.

Sigh.

Anyway, I've been wanting to get a concrete birdbath (raccoons shouldn't be able to knock it over) and do the mosaic tile treatment to it. It's on my long list of things to do...

Nicki - I have a really heavy concrete birdbath. I'm sure a cat couldn't move it, but the raccoons have managed to knock the top section off a number of times.

I got the $20 cement Walmart one. My dog likes to drink out of it for some reason, maybe tastes like birds? Not to mention birds that smell like dog breath! ARRG!

Here is one I have been wanting to make, I don't know if it appeals to you but if you cannot repurpose your broken one maybe you could use it to mosaic one of these?

Thanks for that link butterfly gardener, I would love to make that bird bath. I have a cement one now that sits up on an old stump so the birds are safer from the neighbor kitties. It is amazing how much joy I get from watching the birds taking a bath. I also hook a mister up that sprays a fine mist all around bird bath area, and watch the hummers zip through it.

MM~ Glad you liked the link. I have seen similar ones but like this plan best, I share your joy of watching the birds bathe! I got a water wiggler and the birds love it too! My niece calls it the "bird jacuzzi".
