Things in your garden

I know we all have things in our gardens that are not plants, etc. Some are statues, arbors, but all garden related. How about posting some of your garden objects 'd art. It is always intersting to see what people place amongst their plants to enhance the space such as Ricky's turtle. I am looking for something to enhance my 8 foot tall and wide ginger. Be careful what you post though as there is a person who has singled me out for posting my gardening buddies pictures and contacted the powers. Happy gardening, Linda

Why would someone contact the powers about you posting pictures of your gardening buddies? The topic is still gardening releated as there's a lot more to gardening then just plants!

Here's a few of the things that I have in my garden.
This is an old tree stump that I found at the edge of a friend's horse pasture. I really liked the stump because it has rocks sticking out of it that the tree had grown around.

Here's one of the latest glass totems that I made for the garden.

I love your glass totums and that dragon. The stump is great. It gives me something to think about. I don't know who did the reporting but I got one of those notes from the powers about inappropriate posting. Linda

Thanks Jackie, for that tip on blue jays liking peanuts. What is a rose folly? I found some interesting info. about bat and birds dropping. Rabies are thought associated to bats only, but cattle (esp. cows) represent 5% to 11% of rabies cases since 2004. Here's the info: Worldwide, bats are predators of vast numbers of insect pests, saving farmers and foresters billions of dollars annually and helping to control insect-spread human diseases, like West Nile virus. Although bats play key roles in keeping insect populations in balance, they are North America's most rapidly declining land mammals. Bats give one or two off springs per year. Wild animals accounted for 93 percent of reported cases of rabies in 2001. The wild animals in which infection was reported included: Raccoons -- 37.2 percent of all animal cases during 2001 Skunks -- 30.7 percent Bats -- 17.2 percent Foxes -- 5.9 percent Other wild animals, including rodents and lagomorphs (e.g., rabbits and hares) -- 0.7 percent. Fresh bat droppings (unlike fresh bird dropping) can contain the histoplasmosis fungus. Bat droppings do not need to come into contact with soil to be a source of the disease. Histoplasmosis is caused by a fungus found primarily in the areas drained by the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The disease is transmitted to humans by airborne fungus spores from soil contaminated by pigeon and starling droppings (as well as from the droppings of other birds and bats). The soil under a roost usually has to have been enriched by droppings for two years or more for the disease organism to reach significant levels. Infection occurs when spores, carried by the air are inhaled especially after a roost has been disturbed. Most infections are mild and produce either no symptoms or a minor influenza- like illness. On occasion, the disease can cause high fever, blood abnormalities, pneumonia and even death. In some areas, including portions of Illinois, up to 80 percent of the population show evidence of previous infection. Outbreaks of histoplasmosis have occurred in Central Illinois. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has reported a potentially blinding eye condition presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome (OHS) that probably results from the fungus. NIH estimates that 4 percent of those exposed to the disease are at risk of developing OHS.

Whole website for gurerrilla gardening: http://www.guerrillagardening.org/ Good reading. The concept is catching on. :) I've done this in my town on my own. I now have a 'partner in crime'. So far everyone has loved what I/we have done. I mean, what else would there be there except a big muddy clay patch with broken glass. Even marigolds are appreciated in vacant lots. It's easy to "stealth bomb" a vacant patch with marigold seeds. I was thinking of leaving a little sign saying something like "Compliments of Secret Gardener" or something so that nobody thinks there are new weeds coming up, and rips things out. Not that anybody ever bothered to rip the weeds out of the vacant lots before.............. This is a good way to give a new home to all those hosta and irises and daylillies that get too big for your own garden. I've 'fessed up' to some of the plantings I've done and the response has been overwelmingly positive. Then I go back and add more things. This is only done to blighted areas around town. Never touch anything that looks like somebody is using the land for something! I haven't done any of those ugly gravel "parking lots" yet, but I figure if I get around to it I will ask the owners and I expect them to probably say OK. Why would they NOT want their gravelly mud pit, that they park cars on to be rimmed with flowering plants that are not invasive? I've also asked my city hall if it was OK to plant at intersections and got a "Uhmm. Ah. Yeah. Sure. Go ahead". I don't think they really understood the undertaking but they said "yes". I figure as long as I don't plant anything too tall that would block the view of cars it shouldn't matter.

My grapes are really pretty right now. I know this sounds dumb but I've got them on an arbor and they are loaded with bunches of grapes hanging down and turning a dusty rose color. Underneath I've got dill in bloom so it's a bright chartreuse, Matrona Sedum ready to bloom with the stems about the same color as the grapes, a huge cloud of Cilantro in full bloom, hostas and yellow marigolds, and I think it's very pretty. Not very conventional, but pretty. Hey Maude - I have white butterfly ginger for the first time this year and received it from someone down south so can't ask them for any zone 4 advice. How do I go about growing that in Iowa? Mine's not very tall and nowhere near blooming yet. I potted it assuming I'd have to winter it indoors. ?????

I'm shocked they had a problem with the garden buddies post. Seems to me we've often posted pet pictures and we all love to see them. Now I'm going to the Conversations page to see if they just moved it over there.

Oh Evie!! Too funny. I don't worry about the web nazzi's the same as I ignore condo comandos(when I lived in a condo) Some people have nothing better to do than complain...or ask what beets taste like HAHAHAHAHA

Back to your topic here, I love this...I have to go take some pics of my inannimate garden dwellers tomorrow. I love seeing how everyone uses 'stuff' to accent add interest and whimsey to their gardens. I am loving the dragon!!

I think they all look great! It's a good way of adding a little of your own personality to the garden.

The snorkeling cat just breaks me up. In a garden shop it's cute, but in a real garden it's perfect (purrfect). I want one!

Barb I love that cyclops steer skull. Must be right out of mythology so does that make your garden a mythological western garden?

Felix, from all the amazing stuff in your yard I know your garden is as delightful as others have said. I may just have to invite myself up one of these days and see it in person. Evelyn, the mirror is fantastic. I am thinking of using that on my Florida room to make the plants look thicker and give the area more interest. It would also reflect the hot tub and make it look like two in the room.

Without our garden "things"...our gardens just wouldn't take on our own personalities.

Everybody's' accoutrements are so neat!

I'm very 'into' accoutrements and garden structures...still in the process of adding more to my yard.

I eventually want to add a vertical accent of sorts, a pergola and a lovely hand-made iron gate, plus a wooden blue tuteur...$$$$$ (LOL)

Until then, tho...here are a few of my small garden accents.

lellie, I adore your yard art. The wood with the cat scene is precious. I also like fish and love what you have done with the hands and that yellow bench is priceless. I kust adore the lizard on your bronze bird. He posed very well. Thanks for all the inspiration. Linda

Sylvia, the bottles are topped with clear glass votive holders and red glass balls. I attached them with clear liquid nails.

Evelyn, I love that sundial!

Felix, the plant behind the dragon is a variegated hydrangea and it gets mostly shade although what sun it does get is right around noon. I love that face, it's great!

Lellie, that old yellow bench is fantastic! And the fish and that cat scene are great too.

I hardly have any "things" in my garden. A few uninteresting windchimes, a random gnome sitting on a hanging basket, and this stuff:

Unidentified bird sits atop the pyramid trellis that I grow tomatoes on.
