What's the prettiest thing in your garden right now?

Just curious what plants look the best in your garden right now. For me I would say the combination of the fountain grass(pink plumes coming on) with the beautiful blue of Verbena Bone. waving up above it. The butterflies love the Verbena the most.

Right now the First Ladies marigolds are full of blooms, and the white impatiens border on the shade garden under the red bud tree is huge.
Ask me again next week -- my white butterfly ginger is getting ready to bloom for the first time.
I'll try to post a photo when it happens.

Here it's datura. The fragrance is wonderful at sundown. The lady of the night (cestrum nocturnum) is late this year, so no flowers yet. When it blooms it will fill the air with fragrance as well. My neighbours across the street used to have a lady of the night that had attained tree like proportions and perfumed the whole street at this time of the year. So what are you doing in your gardens right now?

So far we've applied a pre-emergent to the new (last year) zoysia and done some spot weeding in the beds. All the plantings we had put in as part of a complete front and side yard re-landscaping survived the Winter well and are or have been blooming (see my posting in Georgia Gardening forum for a pix of our "Weeping Cherry's First Spring"). The bonsai will need to wait to go back out to make sure the last frost has passed, and I'm still carrying the new composter around in the back of the truck, but will at least pick a spot for it soon. The backyard, heavily treed, shady, and with a good crop of English Ivy (at least it's down from most of the trees) will be the focus of this year's efforts. We plan on erecting a fence along the back and one side (our neighbor has fenced in the other side), removing much of the ivy, creating pathways, planting some shade tolerant trees and shrubs,and leveling the one area that does get pretty good sun. Also on the agenda is moving our garden work table from inside the storage area under the sunroom to a covered patio area that is next to the area that will be leveled. Finally, we'll be looking at what to plant in a sloped raised bed area on the side of the house that was formed when we had the grade leveled and a retaining wall built along the side lot line. Our neighbor subsequently partially landscaped this area and we are cooperating on completing it. All this would probably make more sense were I to post pictures. I'll do so as we focus on the various "projects" that I've enumerated. Best Wishes--Carl

What Trees in Your Yard Look Prettiest Now?

I am a bit of a sucker for trees, so most well-grown trees look good to me in winter. I love many of the evergreens (and you could ask for suggestions for your area on the conifer forum once all the brouhaha of the format change has died down): Hemlocks, though I wouldn't suggest them for anyone in warmer areas - go for evergreens that aren't insect prone. Spruce of various kinds come in all sizes though this one is quite large and still growing rapidly: Many of the pines are nice, though I grow only the native white pine. There is a Japanese lacebark pine that has interesting gray patterned bark as it ages and short needles that I pass in a demonstration garden near where I work that is quite lovely. Dogwoods - This is a C. kousa branch, but pagoda dogwood (Cornus alternifolia) are nice in winter as well. Other trees with particularly nice branching structure and color include many of the Japanese maples and weeping trees. Many of the birches have interesting bark: river (especially Heritage - look at coronum/Jane's photos of hers as it features in many of her bird photos on the mobile features threads), black, yellow and white/paper, and though many aren't suitable for suburban yards and aren't readily available in nurseries, there are some smaller selections that are available. Stewartia is really nice in winter to my eye, with interesting mottled bark and delicate twigs. In a few weeks, the red maples will be high on my list as their young bark and swelling buds create a reddish haze.

What trees and Shrubs Look Prettiest Right Now?

Our Acuba here covered in ice , is right outside our bedroom window along with a spreading, unknown named camellia , is also a mainstay around our house, it's huge! Also, there is a planted border of Leland Pines for protection and privacy along our N and NW sides of our property, as the famers' woods were mowed down for selling, bummer, but these evergreens are about 20' tall now, beautifully magnificent, and attract all of our local birds! The beautiful holly shrubs are planted staggered with the taller evergreens and will reach their maximum height of bout 6' soon, and are beautiful I love to use magnolia cuttings in arrangements, and just enjoy their presence. For blooming, I saw my yellow Carolina Jasmine, which is really spreading out and up now, had a few blooms in January. That is a nice surprise! Keeping Nandina around the house also allows the birds to come closer and find the feeders, so all of the above are beautiful year round and provide insulation, wind-breaks, and beauty.

Ooooh, the purple coneflower (a personal favorite!), pink lilies, and the purple loosestrife. I have this combo blooming in three places in my yard and it looks great! I can't wait (well I can but...) for the aster's and goldenrod to take over in a few (hopefully) more weeks!

My yard is a disaster from remodeling construction last year and we've spent this summer building block retaining walls. I have spent very little time grooming what flower beds I have left and they are looking pretty rough to say the least so every blossom I do get is a little touch of heaven through this construction nightmare.

In the mornings it is the Heavenly Blue morning glories.Today there is a beautiful daylily,French Silk.There is a knock your socks off shade bed with Firecracker Fuschia,Caladiums,
& coleus.I finally found a spot for
some New Guinea impatiens in this shade bed that gets a little morning sun.Iris

Agatache Anise Hysop - It's 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide and the bees and butterflies are crazy about it. Also have purple coneflower and balloon flower that look very nice now.

My grapes are really pretty right now. I know this sounds dumb but I've got them on an arbor and they are loaded with bunches of grapes hanging down and turning a dusty rose color. Underneath I've got dill in bloom so it's a bright chartreuse, Matrona Sedum ready to bloom with the stems about the same color as the grapes, a huge cloud of Cilantro in full bloom, hostas and yellow marigolds, and I think it's very pretty. Not very conventional, but pretty.

Hey Maude - I have white butterfly ginger for the first time this year and received it from someone down south so can't ask them for any zone 4 advice. How do I go about growing that in Iowa? Mine's not very tall and nowhere near blooming yet. I potted it assuming I'd have to winter it indoors. ?????

My ginger has been potted for over a year. It's in a huge pot (16 - 18"" across, I'd guess) and the plant stands about 4 1/2 feet over the soil level. I kept it in the greenhouse during the winter, and even then its growth slowed way down. This fall I want to divide it so I can plant some in the ground next spring to see how large it will get.
My daughter in MS has one in the ground that just started blooming, so I guess this is the right time of year.
I promised photos, but I think it will be a couple of weeks before it's fully open - it's not a cool weather bloomer.

The hybrid Legend rose finally snapped out of its early slump and has three huge gorgeous red roses atop it. Their red color glows from a distance. Also, in its third year, the white butterfly bush planted at the top of the vegetable garden is like a floral fountain,.. a blue swallowtail butterfly flew out of it today as I checked the blossoms. Also, the prettiest blooming container has an Intensia lilac rose special annual phlox that is a mound of fushia pink above two magenta colored purple wave petunias in a rusty, holey porcelain bucket I found at the dump.

PS..Of the vegetables, the tomato plants and green (no, none of them are red yet) tomatoes are beautiful, healthy and lush and preparing, I hope, for a nice big crop of ripe tomatoes.
