What's the prettiest thing in your garden right now?
Comments (10)My grapes are really pretty right now. I know this sounds dumb but I've got them on an arbor and they are loaded with bunches of grapes hanging down and turning a dusty rose color. Underneath I've got dill in bloom so it's a bright chartreuse, Matrona Sedum ready to bloom with the stems about the same color as the grapes, a huge cloud of Cilantro in full bloom, hostas and yellow marigolds, and I think it's very pretty. Not very conventional, but pretty. Hey Maude - I have white butterfly ginger for the first time this year and received it from someone down south so can't ask them for any zone 4 advice. How do I go about growing that in Iowa? Mine's not very tall and nowhere near blooming yet. I potted it assuming I'd have to winter it indoors. ?????...See MoreWhat's the prettiest thing blooming in your yard right now?
Comments (44)Right now I'm into the color GREEN! Green means IT LIVED!!! I'm loving the green sprouts from the trees to the potted plants. And, My BIG Su-prize! While cking my 'shade plant' holding bed I saw a huge hydrenda (sp) bloom! Further inspection showed it to be my little 5" snowball bush! The bloom is as big as the plant! Not only did the baby live, but it bloomed grown up size blooms! I'm so proud! Blooming now in my yard- 2 bunches of purple oxlias (also the ones in pots I just bought from HD) 2 wh salvia blooms 2 tulips 2 bunches of mini daffs 1 old fashion wh petunia bloom And 3 acres of weed/wildflowers-breath taking!...See MoreThe prettiest plant in my garden right now ...
Comments (9)Ragna, they can easily get 12 feet and taller, depending on how much moisture they get. They are prolific seed producers and the seeds survive the winter just fine. I always have some that sprout around the mother plant. They are a perennial in their native habitat, but not here. If we have a warmer winter, they might re-sprout from the roots. If you want to minimize the number of seeds they produce, just cut off the bloom stalks. The seeds remain viable for many years, too. Just a reminder that the seeds are very poisonous as they contain ricin, so be sure to keep them away from children and animals. My moringa tree is probably close to 15 feet tall now and loaded with fragrant white blooms. I've seen hummers feeding from them this week. See a few seed pods forming but not certain they'll mature before the first frost. I do have one tree in a large pot, so I'm planning on protecting that one as I'd like to harvest some seeds....See MoreBusiest shrub in your yard right now?
Comments (4)My butterfly bushes (Buddleia) are the most popular shrub right now. Always busy with butterflies. I love how this plant keeps blooming all Summer long and into the Fall, too. Like Blue Onblue, my Joe Pye Weed, which will also be blooming this week, is the winner when it comes to attracting pollinators and butterflies. However, I've noticed that if a praying mantis shows up all the insects leave. When this happens, I have to go out, find him and remove him and the activity starts up again. It's just fasinating how many insects love this plant. Iris S, Some of my Joe Pye Weed gets pruned by deer. Usually when they are about 4 feet tall. It will grow additional branches. The height is a bit shorter, but it still blooms for me. My JPW will grow over 10 feet tall if the deer don't munch it. A few weeks ago my milkweed patch was extremely busy with honey bees, butterflies and loads of other pollinators....See Morebogturtle
