What is Summersweet??

I planted a whole package of sweet pea seeds, and only 2 sprouted :-( One is white. :-( - however the scent is wonderful!

Here's a link to some great info on Summersweet, although no pics. I googled for some good pics, but I'm not finding a photo that does this shrub justice. I'll have to go out and take pictures of my bushes--they are so heavy with blooms!

Four O'Clocks! This is the first year I've had them and I absolutely love the scent. It's great to sit outside at night and smell them on the breeze.

Moonflower vine is just starting to bloom - the scent is to die for and I will have it till frost. I plant it so I can smell it all evening and into the night in my familyroom......

Honeysuckle and star jasmine are sweetest just now, in my August garden. Am now looking forward to the fall flush of blooms on the roses, expected here sometime in October. :-) Becky

I just spread a bunch of donkey manure in my next-year's sunflower patch, and that's pretty fragrant. :-)

Ummm, donkey manure! Yes, I believe that would be pretty fragrant! lol

:-) My broom dalea is just going out of bloom, so the fragrance is fading. The snake weed will be next to bloom, another native bush with tiny wonderfully fragrant flowers (yellow).

The cloyingly sweet honey-scented Gypsophila paniculata 'Bristol Fairy'. Not the most pleasing smell but certainly the sweetest.

In the past two months of very dry weather I've enjoyed tall garden phlox, four o'clocks, Stairway to Heaven red climbing rose and an unknown yellow shrub rose. But the sweetest smell in my garden this morning was the moist earth after the night rain. HOO-RAYYYYYY!! Cheryl

For me it's the foliage of Tagetes lemmonii...Lemmon's Marigold. Smells like bubble gum.

Nicotiana, oriental lilies, phlox and 4 o'clocks. I also am constantly picking and sniffing the foliage of teh lavenders, agastache, oregano, scented geraniums and monarda. I don't have nearly as much fragrant cloud nicotiana this year becase many of my seedlings didn't make it, and I'm definitely missing it though. When you have masses of it, it's almost overwhelming at dusk.

I have two beautiful and highly fragrant blooms that have just opened on my white butterfly ginger...hooray! I am so glad I added this one.

Hosta Plantagenea, old fashioned hosta. Summersweet was the most fragrant but is about done except for the small variety hummingbird. Sweet autumn clematis is blooming but I don't like that invasive plant and wouldn't recommend it.

My Darlows Enigma rose is always in bloom and is very sweet smelling. It is one of the few rose scents that my nose can pick up.

'Angel Face', my latest rose acquisition. Amazing fragrance and the bloom color is exquisite! It's still small so I have it in a pot on my porch where the fragrance is free to drift in through the open windows. Heavenly!

I have about a dozen buddleias out back and they are all in full bloom, as are the few I have along the front picket fence. They smell lovely, too. The tiger swallowtails have taken up permanent residence so twice the beauty - lucky me. : )

Not in my personal garden (yet), but every day at work even my semi-working nose is impressed with the fragrance of the clerodendron trichotomum (harlequin glorybower) in the Japanese Style Garden. Even after the white, tubular flowers and leaves have dropped, the tree is still awesome as the tiny blue fruits, framed by bright red calices, persist well through autumn.

Ah, Foxglove, two zones farther south, my clethra has just about finished it's bloom cycle ... one lonely late-blooming panicle has just hit its peak. It's a wonderful shrub for color and fragrance this time of year.

I still have Fragrant Tea Olives in bloom. After it rains, they sprout new flowers. Fewer than the first bloom of spring, but the smell is still intoxicating.

By day, Almond Verbena.

After sundown, 4'O Clocks and when the humidity is high (like tonight), Kentucky Colonel spearmint.

Here it's datura. The fragrance is wonderful at sundown. The lady of the night (cestrum nocturnum) is late this year, so no flowers yet. When it blooms it will fill the air with fragrance as well. My neighbours across the street used to have a lady of the night that had attained tree like proportions and perfumed the whole street at this time of the year. Unfortunately they ripped it off this past Spring. I miss the fragrance floating on the street when I get home from work.
