I'm taking over the front yard!

There's limited room in the sun for daylilies in my back yard so I've decided to take over my front yard. DH doesn't know it yet, but what's a girl to do?

As soon as my order arrives next week I'm planting them in the front. I think maybe along the edge of my driveway in a line, and then when they bloom (next year) I'll plan on where their permanent home will be.

It's not like we use the front yard! Who says the front has to be grass just because everyone else's front is just grass?!

Can you tell I'm already apprehensive about this?

You go for it!!! My front yard has lots of gardens of roses and daylilies. People love it, they give me lots of compliments. Who needs all that grass anyway?

We have have many rainey days here but lots of sunny ones also :-)) What I do is snap off the seed head part of the stalk on the daffs every few days and or cut (at the very top) off the dying spent flowers. In that mixed daff collection pictured wave after wave of flowers opens. As some finish, others start. So deadheading keeps the mixture looking good even now and they started weeks and weeks ago. In fact they started the very, very beginning of April. Here is how they look now with the last wave flowering and I have cut off all the spent blooms leaving the flower stalk. Here you can see the daylily folliage running in front of the tulips. It should make the tulip folliage much less noticable. Again, as soon as the tulips drop their flower pedals, I will snap off the very top of the stem which has the seed head. I just leave folliage, don't much worry about it. I find it's gone on it's own soon enough and there is always something else going on in the garden to look at. In the two belgium block mini terraces running accross which is were the daffs are, I plan to plant zinnias for summer long color. I will use seedlings and just plant them between the daffodil folliage. I am sure there will be some lang time there between when the daff flowers are all gone and I get my zinnia seedlings in. I haven't even startted the seeds yet as it has been too cold. But I have been growing zinnias in that front section for the past two years. This was before I put in the belgium block mini terraces late last summer. That then allowed me to plant the area in bulbs last fall as planned.

Why not kill the vine with kindness? Fill jars with dilute Roundup solution (3 parts water, I part Roundup), place ends of vines in the jars through holes in the lids and seal the jars by twisting the jar, not the lid. The jars can be hidden by shrubs or other vegetation. The vines will gladly take up the Roundup/water solution and be grateful for the additional water. Top off the solution in the jars as needed with additional solution as the vines take in the water and transport the roundup into their roots. Next year, the vines will be very unhealthy if they even survive the winter. Repeat the second year if necessary. All the roots are probably interconnected, so all parts of the vine in your yard and the neighborÃ¢ÂÂs yard will eventually die. Commiserate with the neighbors when they express sadness over the unexplained death of their beloved vine.

Denise, I was going to ask if anyone had any suggestions on what to put in the place of the Magnolia. I don't think there's any way I could talk my husband into taking it out, but I was trying to figure out what would look good there just in case I did. I think the variety of Magnolia is Little Gem so it's not supposed to get big like the regular Magnolia, but I agree that it kind of blocks the view. I'm really not much of a tree person, which is why I was glad to get rid of the trees on the middle tier. I like planting flowers and the trees cause too much shade sometime. I would love to fill that center spot with daylilies and other flowers. I've been trying to get hubby to let me take out the Yaupon by the front door and put something lower growing. I would actually like to take out all of the yaupons, but I can't make up my mind what I would want there instead. We have a shorter stone wall in the backyard, so we had to do a little bit at a time also. Laurie

One thing I've seen on this forum over the years is that people love all manner of less-than-desirable things. I don't think good design is based on "loving something" unless that thing can be proven as "good" relative to other possible solutions. While some of these things are difficult to categorize, when they are finally sorted out via trial and error, it demonstrates their value. Do tutus really fit as the better solution? I think the problem with them usually boils down to scale.

You go girl!!!! My daughter lives in a neighborhood where there is a homeowners association and when she wanted to plant flowers in the front yard her husband said she couldn't because it wouldn't "match" everyone elses yard. Who wants to have a yard just like everyone elses? Anyway, she started planting a little at a time, and her front garden is now gorgeous. Everyone in the neighborhood loves it and shes got the prettiest yard on the street. What on earth do people see in acres and acres of grass anyway? :)

well,I dug out every bit of grass in my front yard several years ago and filled it full of roses,and now have daylilies in the mix, too and if a rose dies I replace it with a daylily.

I'm with you. Who needs to spend money on gas to mow grass?
We have many acres and decided this spring to put in more flower beds and eliminate some of the grass in the front of the house. Front yard is now the home of many new daylilies.:- ).Still have plenty of room for more.
I've kept pathways between the rows of new beds with grass but alot less than we had previously. It's a work in progress but I think it will pay off.

That's beautiful Chris! I agree - why should a front yard be all boring grass? I wish I could put daylilies in my front yard, but they would get eaten by deer (I'm only allowed to fence the back yard).

Is that blue fescue (sp?) between your rows of daylilies?

I'm totally doing it! I just bought Happy Returns which has about 12 scapes and 2 blooms and plenty of buds and Strawberry Candy which has tons of buds. (hey, slim pickin's around here, but the Happy Returns looks awesome!).

My daisies are all dying now in the front bed and look pathetic so I'll have to deadhead them and find something to put next to them for color. I can't put SC there because it will clash with my coneflowers and liatris. I could put Joan Senior or Happy Returns there, but they are too big for that spot. What to do, what to do...
