Wow! A VERY generous gardener

I went to a gardeners house yesterday and he loaded my car up with all kinds of plants. He gave my around 30 types of coleus, I am very excited about them!!!! He also gave me Coneflowers, pinwheel jasmine, white rain lilys, yellow jacaranda, african foxgloves, grapevine, coreopsis, sunflowers, and more. I couldn't believe all the stuff he gave me. He was soo nice and generous! I will try and take picutes of some of the things he gave me.

This has been a real treat/blessing for me because I have not purchased any plants in a while. Money is tight because we are paying 2 mortgages.

I would love to "pay it forward". I am currently rooting things right now and would love to share with others. I have other things that don't need to be rooted that I can share. So if anyone would like to come by, let me know. I am in Riverview.

Wow did he pot them up that day or does he have them setting around to give away.
Pretty cool.I bought my dad some of those Caladiums in the last picture for his little Porch front garden at his apartment and they were 4.99 each!!

Wow, what a great, sunny location for your garden! Regarding the tilling, you should do some research on lasagna gardening--you can kill a couple of birds with one stone on that one (adding good nutrient to a new garden, preventing the grass regrowing/growing through, and NO MORE TILLING!!!). Lasagna gardening is simply layering (lasagna style!) mulch and compostable materials into your garden until the garden itself is compost. Furthermore, it supposedly results in no new weeds (I am only just trying it out, container-style, this year for the first time), but that may depend upon the layers that you use and what's in them. It's probably too late to find some fall leaves, unless you have a local extension or agency that can point you to some--I have some for my composter, but I ain't shippin' 'em to ya' from Colorado!!! Besides, I need them for my own garden. ;-D Anyway, you have more than enough "mulch" answers here--very good, all of them. Points to remember: different things work for different people, different climates, and different end purposes. Maybe you don't mind pulling the occasional weed or two, in which case, straw or hay might not be a problem. You've gotten some great advice from some seasoned gardeners, here, and if I may make one more suggestion on your garden plan, check which things grow shorter than others, and put those all on the south side. Cukes, lettuce, radishes should all be to the south of peas, tomatoes, and most herbs (although, herbs should be south of the peas & 'maters). I would even suggest doing the herbs in pots that you can pull out come wintertime--there's nothing like fresh herbs in the deepest darkest pit of winter. One comment I must make, however, is that, according to the size/scale of your wheelbarrow, your plot doesn't look even close to large enough for what your plan shows--pumpkins can take over an entire garden, and tomatoes, well, they have a character all their own! If that's your house in the background, surely you won't be feeding the small army that 8 tomato plants will produce in your zone. Be sure to give enough room for everything, and if this is your first (or even second or third... or twenty-third!) attempt at gardening, it's common (a common "sickness" among gardeners?) to try to put to much into too small a space. Go with less-you'll be able to figure out what works and doesn't, what you'd try again and what you'd do differently. Do keep a journal of your dates, notes, etc (it doesn't have to be formal, but I do suggest using a non-water-soluble pen, since it's not uncommon for garden journals to get "watered" with the rest of the garden from time to time!) so you'll know what's what for next year. And yes, just like in sports, "there's always next year!" Welcome to gardening, and please post back to let us know how your garden turns out! You're very wise to plan in such detail!!!

This system is above ground. The tubing (about the size of a water hose) is the 400 ft part. It comes in 100 ft rolls for $27. wholesale) Where I had to cross a walkway or path, I ran the tubing through PVC pipe (to protect it from lawymowers) and dug just enought to hide the PVC and then covered it with mulch or sod. Used metal hairpins to keep in in place and used the punch (as Cameron said) to put the holes in the tubing. If you put the holes on the side of the tubing instead on the top, it will be much easier to cover with mulch. The only visable part is the small black "stakes" that hold the 180 degree spray heads (about 4-6" tall). The large and small tubing are covered with mulch. The nice part is you can add or take away emitters at any time. The tubing is commercial and MUCH thicker and better than the ones at L or HD's. My neighbor has had his setup for 15 years with the same tubing. I find commercial grade is always better. I will be GLAD to help anyone interested to buy the supplies wholesale. Hi Ariel!

You're not kidding! That was wonderful of him! I know exactly how you feel, when I went to my first swap I didn't have many plants and everyone loaded me up with all kinds of wonderful things! And now that I have a few things established, I am all too happy to share them! I think that's why gardening in so much fun. :)

Wow! You did pretty well, makes you feel good doesn't it?

I'm starting to work on what I have to give away or trade to help uphold the tradition of generosity among gardners. I have lots of getting-sunburned-since-the-huge-oak-died aspidistra and plenty of pinecone ginger (shampoo ginger); these both came from my great-grandmother. I'm in Bradenton if you have shade and are interested. I'd love a cutting of the blackberry waffle coleus since I didn't get in a mail order for it this year.

Wow! Gardeners are just the best! It's so much fun to share. I haven't been able to share much since moving here, but I will. I was embarrassed at the first swap not having anything to share and going home with a car ful.
Could I have some seeds of the cone flowers? I see white (white swan maybe)and I think one of the newer ones in your fourth picture. Thanks

The person I got these from is a landscaper and a coleus collector. So alot of the plants were already potted up. Many of the plants were his "extras". He said he also starts alot of his plants from seeds and cuttings, and he was more than happy to share them.
In the 1st picture are the plants he gave me cuttings of, and I potted those up last night.

Amber, I would love to get together! Right now my weekends are a bit crazy because we are doing open houses every Saturday and Sunday. Weekdays are better for me, but if you can only do it on the weekends we can meet in the evening since it stays light so late now.

Suzanne, I have shampoo ginger. But I would be happy to start rooting a cutting for you.

Marion, I have never been good at seed collecting, but for you I will do my best!

Aww gee blushing here.. Thank you. Once the flower head has turned brown I just pick them off and put in a envelope opened on the counter to dry. Email me with your addy and I'll send postage and a padded envelope.
