Basil & rosemary -- shall we dry it or throw it away?
Comments (22)I also think the pesto idea is the best thing to do. It really preserves the fresh taste of the basil. I make several batches of pesto throughout the summer. I then pour it into ice cube trays, freeze, and them pop them out into zip lock bags. You can use the pesto as a last minute ingredient in hundreds of dishes. My favorite way is just in a bowl with olive oil and some good crusty bread to dunk! Here is the recipe: 2 cups (packed) fresh basil leaves 1/4 cup olive oil Whir in a food processor or blender until fairly smooth. That's it!! A true pesto recipe has parmesan, garlic, and pine nuts, but I leave those out when I'm just wanting to freeze it....See MoreFirst time dehydrating
Comments (15)My new Excalibur 9 tray model was delivered yesterday. My first experiment to see if I want to do anymore is orange peels from this morning's juice. I probably would have done it differently but I didn't have time this morning since one of the girls had to be at school early. I scooped out the insides after getting back home this sliced the pith off. Then I zested a lime, peeled the pith off and sliced it. It is going now and my kitchen smells really good. I decided not to slice the limes whole because I made marmalade from limes from this same tree by slicing them whole and hated it b/c it was so bitter. I have a crisper full of limes and loads of lemons from my neighbors ponderosa lemon tree. They are a cross between citron and lemon and are huge with thick pith. I've frozen zest in cubes with a little juice to hold them together and I've frozen juice in cubes but the freezer is pretty full so I'm hoping that zest and slices work out ok. Also bunches of oranges that we will juice and satsumas that we eat. Not to mention the grapefruit tree that hangs over our fence. I've been putting peels in vinegar for nice smelling cleaning vinegar. But since I have a gallon and 1/2 already I thought I would try something different. When I am feeling lazy I just toss the peels in the compost....See MoreExcalibur. . .What's the Attractions?
Comments (3)This is the one I got on Linda's recommendation: Nesco FD-75PR 700-Watt Food Dehydrator So far I love it. I did wonder about the Excalibur and I did think at first about getting one, but my kitchen is small and I didn't think it would fit on my counters very well. I think I made the right choice. With mine, I also ordered an extra fruit roll-up package (it comes 2 in a package) and I also ordered a clean-a-screen package (same as above) and two more trays, taking mine up to 7 trays total. My totally for all 4 items was around 89.66. Still less than the Excalibur. This model can stack to 30 trays, of course that would never fit anywhere in my kitchen but I think I can go a couple of more :-) All in all - I've found it to be totally reliable. I haven't tried tomatoes yet. Mine are done and I'm not buying those tasteless things in the store....well....maybe I will just to see if it will dry tomatoes dry enough for powder 'cause I really want to try that. Comments (32)I take one Ambien 5 mg on the overnight home from Maui. Not a good idea to take a Tylenol PM or similar. The 'sleep' part is an antihistimine and dries out your sinuses -- which are already drying out in the plane's stale air. If you have pain, take Tylenol or aspirin. The warning about liver damage is for people who use both alcohol and Tylenol all the time and in large amounts. I *wish* I could take aspirin; it's a superior pain medication but I'm allergic to it. It won't damage your stomach if you take it with a small amount of food, like a cracker. Eye shades and earplugs, along with a pillow or neck pillow will help. The ability to project a cold stare is useful if you are seated with a Chatty Cathy. LOL I hope you are seated 'bulkhead' -- more leg room. I hope you are not seated in the last row in a seat that doesn't recline! (Look on seatguru.com to see your plane.)...See MoreLinda_Lou
