Update on the Walmart lids

I canned up the strawberry preserves this morning using the Wally lids.

First, the box states that they are made in China.

They worked just fine but it seemed to me that about half the jars took longer to ping than the Ball brand. All jars did seal. I picked up more lids today, Ball, and their box does not say were they are manufactured.

I have never bought lids in bulk and I do need some more rings, can you point me to a source?

I purchase mine from a few different places.

If you have a local True Value or Ace Hardware store, they are happy to order some for you if they don't stock them. That works for me when I just need a few dozen.

For bulk lids (I buy them 48-60 boxes at a time), I have used Lehman's in Ohio for "generic" lids or Fillmore Container in Pennsylvania for Ball brand.

I use Lehman's. If you have an Amish store in the area they usually carry bulk sleeves of lids too at a great price.

Thanks Lori! I agree ~ I needed something somewhat attractive, since I am in a front-facing condo. So I ventured into the woods and cut down a bunch of 3/4-in or so bamboo, and used twine to lash it together. It has worked pretty well thus far. Unfortunately, during a couple thunderstorms, the whole thing ~ pot and all, has toppled over. Luckily the vines escaped unscathed, with only negligible tomato and small branch casualties....however, the bamboo cage broke apart at a few junctions, so I have had to re-lash with more twine here and there. I have since drove 2 stakes into the ground, diagonally behind the pot corners, and secured with rope to the lower bamboo junctions for additional support. If a considerably strong thunderstorm is on the horizon, I carefully pick the whole thing up and move it to the patio...ugh it is so f*ing heavy & tall! ~Caroline

Help me ID my cheap-o Walmart Roses

Thank you! My other cheapo roses have bloomed! Any help with naming them will be appreciated. You were right and upon closer inspection the roses did have black spot. I got some spray and applied it so I hope with proper use of the black spot spray it will recover. It continues to make blooms though. I got this one, thinking it was different from my other creme colored one. It might not but I'll let you fine people be the judge of that. And bonus photo of the Queen Elizabeth after another day of opening. Beautiful! Clipped it and have it on my wife's desk now.

I use the bulk lids from Lehmans. They say they are made in USA.

FYI all of Ball's jars and lids are made in the USA. Not sure why they don't say so on their packaging. You would think with competition being made in China they would promote the fact.

I never buy anything from China if I can help, and absolutely would not buy any food from China. They have a long track record of lying about the ingredients in everything (remember the melamine in dog food and baby food, put in to boost the "protein" levels???)--who would know if those canning lids were made of toxic lead???
If I am boiling it with food, I want it made in the US or other country with consumer protection laws which are enforced.
