Asian pears

Highly recommended! I have three types of these. The older tree is just going on 4 years old and had two big pears last last summer. These don't need sprays for any kind of pest or disease. The ones I enjoyed last year were a dark tan color and russeted surface skins. Once picked, they hold up very well in the fridge, up to almost 6 months! I love the crisper juicy taste compared to regular pears. My trees are small and keep a compact size. Thought I would have posted a link on the tree forum, as opposed to here, for those wanting something that will last without the need to can. Haven't tried any canning, but with a 6 month keeper, these hardly need any kind preserving. They do recommend a couple of types for cross pollination, but after last years light harvest, and only one flowering tree this year, it will still offer a few fruits. I do hope that next year at leat one of the others will start to get into flowering.

Wow, 6 months, that's amazing.

I think Asian pears are one of the few fruits that do require additional acid for safe BWB canning. Figs are the other common one that I can think of.

My newest fruit tree, a 11/2 yo Asian pear tree has 4 new pears on it. I can hardly wait for them to get ripe. I just love it when my fruit trees bear fruit for the first time. I had to thin out a lot of peaches from my tree as there is no way that small tree can support all those peaches. I go out every week or two and check out the fruit. Those trees are determined to put out fruit on branches the size of a pencil. I don't want any broken branches.

campv: Stark's have a dwarf 'Hardy Giant' Asian pear dwarf supreme that they list as disease resistant. They say their other varieties of Asian pears are not disease resistant. Do you remember the name of the Asian pear that you have there? The pics of the 'Hardy Giant' show quite large pears but I'd expect them to be smaller here for us. fruitnut: I wonder if Stark's 'Hardy Giant'is similar to your Korean Giant or Olympic? I'd prefer firm/crunchy as opposed to juicy also!

Rina, The only work I did on this tree was thinning fruits. Too many fruits will snap the branches. I try to graft a new variety anywhere to balance the tree structure. Pear is one of the easiest tree to graft. I choose my varieties from the USDA Corvallis. Scion woods are free and just have to pay for Fedex shipping. They asked you for a reason to obtain the scion woods and I usally told them for a cold hardy trail in Zone 5. In about 5 years then I email them the results. It looks sort of like cork and it is by the surface of the pear. Each spot is something like 1/8" or so (bigger or smaller as well). I think Geraldo may have it there; bitter pit is primarily a problem on apples but I have also seen it on my asian pears. One last long shot is stink bugs, but these mainly deform the fruit and you did not mention deformed fruit. See good link below for more information on bitter pit including treatment. I'm guessing there's sufficient acid in that recipe to make the additional lemon juice unnecessary. However, that's only a guess. This would be a good question to email Dr. Andress about. She's usually very quick to reply and since Asian pears keep so well, there should be at least a little leeway before you need to can them. Then, if you don't hear from her, you could go ahead and can with the additional lemon juice. That's definitely the most conservative approach. Peach trees tend to break branches if they become loaded. My grafted peach/plum/apricot has differnet limbs and leaf shapes. The peach and apricot are small producers due to the single limbs. The two plum types have never had fruits beyond 2 plums two years ago. Soon, it will be cut down if it doesn't produce anything useful. Its over 12 years old now and has not been a very good performer ever. Years ago, I had two peach types and both split right down the middle due to the excess weight of the limbs. Peach ha sonly about a 20 year lifspan. I expect about 10 Housi asian pears and already see very tiny fruits on nice long stems.
