What happened to my sweet pickles???

Lastnight, I was preparing everything for Day 3 of Linda Lous cukes. I've got my cukes floating in a small Rubbermaid tub in my spare bathroom. Anywho, got the water heating, I went to take off the tin foil I had covering the tub, and.....WHOA...the most disgusting smell hit me in the face. It was a combination of moldy cheese and roadkill. GACK!

So I drained the sorry looking things (the water was cloudy/foamy) and promptly took the tub-o-nasty cukes to my compost pile and dumped them. Quite a lot of them were soft and mushy. They were fine the day before...a little scum on the top of the water, but they didn't smell or anything.

What happened? Was I supposed to submerge them? Was it the heat? I'm in Florida, so our house temp is set between 75-77 degrees.

I'm bummed...there were 179 beautiful cukes waiting for sweet pickle chunk heaven.

Sigh.
