Computer crash deleted favorites

Hi everybody. Our computer was down for a while but I'm now back up.

Not too long ago someone attached a link to a really good bread making website. I did some searching but couldn't find that post here. If you see this can you please let me know the site address? All of our favorites are gone. I never thought to print out a list of them before, but I guess I'll be doing that once a month or so, now. I had some really good favorites that took a while to compile!!

Could it be King Arthur flour? They have many recipes and supplies for making almost any kind of bread. If you posted here about bread, how about trying the search. The search engine does leave a lot to be desird, but can give you a lot of hits by just typing in the word 'bread'.

Yeah, I am searching in this forum and did so already, but it's a lot to get through. Thought the person might see this and save me hours of reading.

The site I'm wanting focused on Artisan Bread and had a little forum for people to discuss bread, opening bakeries, etc.

Ellie if you only have anti virus you are at risk. I would suggest you get Malwarebytes and SUPERantispyware, both of which are free. These require you to manually update and run scans but they only need doing every one to 3 weeks depending on how conscientious/nervous you are. I never leave my external hard drive connected to the computer. This is both for safety and economy. Connected it is open to attack and also runs all the time. If you have a factory built computer your power supply might be taxed to a degree unless your external drive is self powered. Most today are not self powered I believe. You wrote: If I can't bring my computer up ( that is called a crash or a blue screen) I install my recovery discs first. The CD drive works even if the computer has crashed. There is no real answer to this untill the catastrophic event occurs. You might get clues for days before the event to warn you. There would also be valuable clues in the event of a blue screen of death from the error message displayed. (BSOD) I assume you mean Best Buy replaced a defective hard drive with a new one? What was written on the labels of the disks from BB? That would be a clue as to what they are for. As I noted before recovery disks allow you to take your computer back to the new state it was in when purchased, a backup created on your external drive will return the computer to the state at the time of that backup. Any work saved in between would be lost. You can store your data on the computer itself and back it up to the external drive for protection. Always a good plan to have data you do not wish to lose saved in 2 locations Outlook is generally a part of Microsoft Office although I understand it can be bought as a stand alone program - quite expensive too. One would presume Cobian Backup came with your Go_Flex drive. It is good that you ask these questions but be sure to allow yourself to enjoy the benefit these things can bring you. A computer is only as good as the person sat in front of the keyboard. Urlee and Cat_ky I have no issues with anyone owning more than one computer, I have 6 and all working yet I live alone. But to purchase another computer "just in case" seems rather more than odd to me and a complete waste of money for an item that keeps becoming out of date with alarming regularity. Don expressed it very wisely I think.

I am suspicious that such a message is from MSE. I am inclined to think you have a virus. Download and run Malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org) and Super Antispyware (www.superantispyware.com) -- both free -- run their scans, and report back. And, as azinoh says, if you are running both Avast and MSE at the same time, stop: choose one and disable the other.

Sounds like what the tech did is accidentally delete the windows partition when he / she installed Linux very easy to do. Or he broke the Master Boot record. You can install windows again on a separate partition and still keep Linux.

I just wanted to mention you can save your favorites as a file and then put it on some form of backup media. The advantage of that compared to a printed list is that if you ever lose your favorites again, you can just re-load the entire list and not have to re-type anything.

Sorry not to nag...

computers are not infallible, although we rely on them every day to perform work for us. they are not like a toaster or a can opener. they do have problems and can fail at any time.

ALWAYS backup your data, and frequently, there are a few good programs that can make backups easier, store your files on a memory stick, or use an external hard disk, disk is cheap

Backup your files weekly, or monthly and every so often take a copy of your data and put it a your safety deposit box.

you will save yourself alot of pain when the inevitable happens.

Just another note about backing up bookmarks etc... Are you using Mozilla Firefox for your web browser? If not, I highly recommend it over Internet Explorer. You can get an "add-on" called Foxmarks that allows you to sync your bookmarks across multiple computers (as well as lots of other fun add-ons). It keeps them in a file on a server so if your computer crashes you can just download them from the server and you're off.

Just a thought...

Those very cheap flash drives are a great way to save important stuff elsewhere too.
