Daylily Grab bag on Thursday

I think this could be peak bloom here. An odd growing season this year, with some plants not blooming at all, and the bud counts are down considerably on others.

Vertical Horizon was blooming today.

WOW!! RITA, That TERRY LYNNINGER is a beauty there.Mine did not look that great, but,its first year so I think it will improve.My problem was it didn't get scapes up out of the foliage and didn't open up good.I did have one bloom at the end looked pretty good..Hate it that LEE PICKLES is not doing good for you.Its really pretty, too.No,I don't have it,but think its very pretty. I love that SELLSTATION PLUM CRAZY. Thats a nice dark one, and that Planter box out front is soo pretty the way you have it planted.just gorgeous, and just love the row of TICK TACK TOE.Just gorgeous,and the LILY Row is beautiful as well.You certainly know how to plant them to make things pop.Bet every one that passes by your place has to go really slow so they can look at your place and the beauty you have created there.Wish I could drive by it too,and see in person.You have worked hard and it really shows. Our clubs have auctions of newer cultivars but if a plant does not sell at auction it goes into a grab bag where the whole bag is sold. Some clubs ask their members to bring daylilies for a sale and some go into a grab bag, where you will get several varieties for a single price.

If you don't know much about him, check out his obituary, he was a heck of a writer and very colorful character. Lawrence Levine had simple needs and a passion for writing. Below, Larry's awesome, poignant essay that I read, in its entirety. Friday, June 07, 2013 An artist friend and I drove the river highway late in the morning, stopping occasionally along the way. He needed to inventory his paintings at The Inn upriver, and I needed to get my drinking water from the spring where watercress grows, but actually,anything done on the river is done to be on the river. Along the highway, the Scotch Broom was invasively yellow, and the wild Sweet Peas painted with watercolors. We've both lived here for decades; we're in our sixties; we've got experienced perspectives. We've done this a bunch. I learn from him; he sees more than I do; he's got artist eyes; I've got writer eyes. If memory serves me well, I can't recall a time that we both, in a rush of deep appreciation, didn't proclaim the North Fork to be the most beautiful river in the world and the watershed paradise. This claim can and should be disputed by anyone who lives on a beautiful river, or on a moderately beautiful river, even on a pretty or cute little river, because learning the lessons the river teaches is gratifying, and if a place makes you feel as if you're in paradise, you are. Why wait. The lessons can be comforting or terrifying, but, if the learner survives, they're meaningful currently, and, over the course of memory, I can appreciate the progression of my education. The education is ongoing, never complete. A headstone will be my diploma. When my artist friend can look out at the river and say, "I remember when..." and I'm on the same memory page, that's the essence of sharing. When I stand in a spot where I have stood a hundred times and am still awe inspired, that's way cool, because I've got this personal theory about how awe has the power to transform, however temporarily and however permanently. I see the scene, simultaneously remembering its many manifestations over time, remembering the man viewing it twenty/thirty years ago, and, for too fleeting a moment, the old awe adds intensity to the present. Obviously, the river can also make a person a bit strange and esoteric, but its a fine madness. Here's how I came to this eccentricity: Over a period of time, an eon ago, the river whispered to me so softly as to be inaudible. Little by little, its voice grew louder, until I could decipher the message. Much akin to the lyrics of The Band's song, "The River Hymn," it called, "Son, you ain't never seen yourself / No crystal mirror can show it clear, come over here instead." It made me an offer to which I put up no resistance, and I've been here ever since. I like that when it addresses me--and address me it does--it always does so as "Son." It parents; it taught me to walk its rocky, slippery bottom, taught me to walk its banks; it taught me a language I work to understand, and it gave me hope that eventually my voice would be accepted into the choir that sang the language that I alone could not. I wasn't born to it; I'm adopted, and being here only gets better the more here I become.

Very pretty. I like Sailing at Dawn. I think I may be at peak too. My daylilies are all doing very good this year. Last year we were in a drought and they didn't look good at all. I am really enjoying them this year.

Just re-checked my seedling map and #5 isn't a Johnny Cash seedling, It's out of a Linda Beck cross (actually makes more sense).

Edward, I do hope Vertical Horizon does well for you. I have some interesting seedlings from it, and it's handled our western PA winters very well without mulch protection.

Your seedlings are really nice, I'm particularly attracted to the Pink Lemonade one. I haven't had any interesting seedlings this year, most didn't bloom at all. Some of last years seedlings improved, but several of them didn't bloom.

I love the Pink Lemonade seedling! Great pink color and nicely ruffled edge! Entwined In the Vine and Vertical Horizon are looking good too!

New to the daylily forum so forgive the ignorance. Would someone please explain to me the references to 'seedlings'? What is the (visual) difference between the daylily plant and the seedlings?

You have some really pretty seedlings. Are you thinking any of them are good enough plants that you will register and introduce them? Which ones?

I like your Pink Lemonade and Red Friday seedlings best. I tried to use Red Friday both ways at least a dozen times this season and I don't think anything took with either pod or pollen.

oldbat2be.....there is no visual difference between daylily plants and seedlings. Seedlings are generally younger daylily plants that may or may not be registered. The seedlings I've posted here are over 3 years old (mostly from my own crosses), and are still being evaluated for registration. Seedlings can change a lot over a 3 year period (some for the better and some for the worse). Some will be eliminated due to poor bud count, scape too low, or buds too close together, etc. Pretty flowers are easier to get IMO than good plant habit. I have some I keep to use in my crosses that don't have the prettiest bloom, but have the ability to put a decent scape on plants they are crossed with. Example below.

This China Clipper seedling just started blooming yesterday. It has a pretty unremarkable flower, but I'm keeping it because of the scape. I will try to cross it with other registered cultivars or my select seedlings and see if I can get a prettier face on this one and keep that nice scape.

Below is a pic of the scape which is very sturdy, and averages 31.5" tall, 21 buds, and lots of branching.

daylilly99....Right now I have several Red Friday seedlings, 2 Pink Lemonade Party seedling, 2 Lillian's Alabama Sunrise seedling, and 1 Carol Todd seedling that I will likely register. I have yet to post pics of a few of those. The Lillian's Alabama Sunrise kids are HUGE....40" scapes, with blooms averaging around 6.5 - 7", 15-16 buds. I have no trouble spotting them as I look out across the seedling beds.

Red Friday has been a frustration for me as well....very poor pod parent, but when it does manage to set a pod for you, be sure you start those seeds. I've got some very nice seedlings from Red Friday. Funny story here is that in passing RF I pollinated it with something and was so sure it wouldn't take that I didn't bother to tag the cross. Right now it's got two small pods on it, but I'm not holding my breath. I've seen it start pods before and then abort them within a weeks time.
