So many blooms... I'm overwhelmed and loving it!

Goodness! It jumped right from the peak of rose season into a whirlwind of daylily blooms opening fast & furious each day. I am keeping up with taking their pictures but have fallen way behind in posting them. It's my own fault because I keep adding more gardens and more plants and I am told by people that I have enough here to open it up for admission...LOL. I have been gardening all my life but daylilies are my newest passion and I have acquired an astonishing number of them in 2 short seasons. I didn't know how exciting it was to wake up early every morning to go out and see 'who' has bloomed. I am way behind on posting but at least I'll have a stash of pictures to keep things going for a long while.

Lovely family you have there and a lovely bench too. Your gardens are always awesome so I don't know how you keep up with them all plus making new daylily beds. BAHAMA BUTTERSCOTCH is a beauty, I love mine too. It would be my favorite for today.

All your blooms are gorgeous! And Connor's little bench is adorable. I think my favorite blooms are Peacock Maiden and the Wiregrass Greenstar twins. Looking forward to seeing more of your flowers!

Hi everyone! What a very pleasant thing to read about such a lovely flower. I just got my first Evelyn bloom on a plant I bought mid-summer this year. The plants arrived right before a heat wave that almost fried them. The nursery I bought them from instructed me to pull off all the leaves so that the plants can focus on the roots and to give it a bit of shade when the temperature went above 90 degrees. I did as instructed and the plants came back very well. I was going to pull off all the new leaves again, but my husband wanted me to keep the second batch on. They continued to sprout new leaves...then buds...and then my one bloom appeared. Both plants are less than a foot tall and the flower is about 2 inches wide. Question 1 - I'm new to growing roses, so any advice would be helpful. At the moment I'm wondering if I should nip off the rest of the buds and try to get the plants to focus on their roots? We get snow here and I'm worried that these plants are too young to survive if I let the buds bloom. Question 2 - On a mature plant, how big do the blooms actually get? I can only find online sources that give the plant size, not the bloom size. Thank you and sorry for the long post.

I bought a number of different named cultivars a few years back. I had the 'Highland Cream' but it didn't make it through the first winter for me either. I would have thought zone 6a would be fine. I do have clay soil and thymes prefer sandy soil, so I do grow mine in raised beds where ever possible. I tried the 'Elfin' but found it to be scraggly and the weeds came up through it. One of those I bought was a Golden thyme, but I lost the name tag... that has been very vigorous and in 2 years it has grown into a large mound that is about 6 inches tall. I just bought 'Annie Hall' last spring and planted around pavers with a lot of sand added and mulched with sand, because it is in a low area. It hasn't been through a winter yet. So far it has been slow to grow. I've grown wooly thyme for a long time and I love it, but I lost it one winter recently when we had hardly any snow cover all winter. Like mnwsgal, one of my more vigorous thymes was started from seed that someone sent me and it was not identified other than creeping thyme. It has grown into a nice 12" mat in one season, which seems very fast to me for a creeping thyme.

Thanks Jim! Lily here's a pic of MOP. Hard to tell a lot but she's prob 21/2 by 3 right now and loaded with buds. Love her! Judy enabled me on this one and many more lol We are quite hopeless when it comes to roses! And lots of other stuff haha!

Hello, Celeste, so glad to be sending you a message. Of course, Number One is the pic of two good looking guys and Number Two is Connor sniffing the daylily, too cute!!! You also have so many beautiful flowers, love the color of Bahama Butterscotch, Early Days is great as is Wiregrass Greenstar--never heard of this one, will have to look it up. You can bet I will be waiting for all posts from you, know there are many more wonderful photos to come. Avedon

Bahama Butterscotch is such a great daylily and you got a great picture of it. Looks like you got the rain that went around us. Love the picture of Connor sniffing the beautiful Jay Farquahar.

Beautiful blooms today. Love EARLY DAYS, and that purple one, too. Conner's little garden bench is so cute, but, "daddy" almost takes it all to sit on :) you have a very good looking family,and your garden is gorgeous.will be looking for more photo's.

Great blooms! I looked and looked and finally narrowed it down to Connor's choice - Jay Farquhar and Early Days.
The bench is so cute and good looks certainly run in your family. I remember you posted a pic of your daughter in a dress too! I happened to notice a Huge hosta by the bench, so you have some hostas too!
You said you had some daylilies before did you count how many you have now? ;)

I was straight out all day deadheading the roses because the japanese beetles are destroying all the pretty blooms, so this is the first time I've had a chance to THANK YOU all for your comments. The forum is moving so fast these days that I want to comment on every post but it's hard to keep up. Just wanted to thank all of you who are posting photos also because I know how time-consuming it is to upload and post.

Nat...yes I grow hostas too and have for years. I often overlook them because they are so low-maintenance but I have quite a few. And I haven't dared to count how many daylilies I have acquired in just 2 seasons, but it's enough to fill 7 raised beds that I had to make.

Thanks for the nice comments about my 'boys' too....of course I think they are the most handsome guys on the planet...LOL.

I was interested in your HEAVENLY FIRE ARROW (looks like a darker relative of THIN MAN and SERGEANT MAJOR), and I looked it up in the AHS database. I'm wondering if you have the wrong name for that plant, because the hybridizer photo looks quite different.

Nate....I was wondering the same thing myself when it started blooming. It seems too dark and more on the purple side and a slightly different form to be Heavenly Fire Arrow, but that's what Bill Maryott sent me. I got it last Fall and this is its first bloom cycle. I LIKE it alot, whomever it is. Maybe I should send a photo of it to Bill to see if he can identify it?

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. I found some other pictures of HFA and they all look more red with an eye.
