Oh oh. Bunnies

We really don't usually have rabbitts around here. Two years ago a rabbitt chewed down the twigs on one of my newly planted Lilacs. I saw it around for awhile (an adult) and then it was splat, roadkill. We have many neighborhood cats walking thru the gardens and we have red fox in the nature preserve accross the street which sometimes come around at night. The rabitts usually live on the other side of the park.

Just now I saw the cutest baby bunnies hopping along right ouside my kitchen door. They soon went into the shrubbery on Azaela Hill and if I hadn't been watching right then, I would have missed it and never known that they were there. Weren't much afraid of me either when I went outside.

I hope this is not bad news for the daylilies. I have planted all sorts of fruiting shrubs for the wildlife to eat but I draw the line when it comes to my daylilies.

We have a cute little bunny (my kids named it Tiny) that has lived in my garden for a couple of months now. I have seen no signs that he/she is chomping on any of my daylilies. I hope yours will be as courteous!

Well, saw a bunny running around the front yard being chased by a squirrel. That was at 7:30 this morning and I was in my PJ's so I didn't go outside to investigate.

You may want to consider an electric fence vs a standard fence. I finally resorted to one in 2002 because of constantly fighting the raccoons raiding the sweet corn. My original fence charging unit just died last month and had to be replaced. My first unit was a Zareba Red Snap'r model number 33B (new model is 33C). I could not find the same unit nearby. So instead, I replaced it with a Fi-Shock model 525CS which had the same specs; it was available locally. It seems to be performing just fine. Hopefully it will last as long as the other unit. One feature of the electric fence option is that you can take up and put down the fence in minutes. Just pound the short poles into the ground so that the wires insulators are at 6 and 12 inches above ground. Use electric cord hand-spool to help take up and put out the fence wire. Different fencing wire lengths on different spools allow you to fence smaller portions of the garden. This is helpful to me when I want to till and work one area while keeping another area protected. The charging unit is attached to the top of a post near the garden and covered by a 5 gallon plastic bucket. The only item to watch is that weeds are not contacting the wire. Otherwise, the fence will short to ground. This happened to me once a few years ago. In one night racoons destroyed a couple of dozen ears of sweet corn. Since then I use an A/C volt meter to check the charge on the fence. The fence has also served for to keep out other small animals such as rabbits. Home Depot and Lowes probably sell one of the above chargers & supplies as do the local hardware stores and gardening centers. They likely also carry other models. The ones above output a continuous charge. There are other models that have a pulsing charge.

Wirosarian, unfortunately we live in a small city so can't shoot. However, thank you for giving me optimism and I will make sure I get some nitrogen rich fertilizer for the first feeding. Sorry for your damage Seil. It took me a few minutes to realize I wasn't seeing things as the rose bushes still had leaves and were quite taller when I visited them yesterday. Thankfully they had only gone through one rose bed before I got repellant today and put some cages up. Nandoll, thankfully I don't see a lot of deer around here as we are quite urban. 98% of mine were definitely rabbits as the cuts were clean at a 45 degree angle and there were rabbit droppings all over the place. The broken branches I believe were from my dogs when I let them out late last night and wasn't keeping an eye out. I can't imagine they could stay out of the beds if the saw rabbits. They ran right back there first thing this morning which was what made me investigate. Catsrose, we have two dogs but we travel Monday through Friday for work and the dogs come with us. I would very much love a cat but would feel terrible leaving it alone for days at a time, even if it could come in and out as it pleased. Thank you tons for all of the advice! I am keeping my fingers crossed for Spring!

A delight. Notice though how tiny the LR and DR are .... I think both break the rules of thumb about minimum passageways for space planning. It is seriously small. Love the use of wallpaper in those attic rooms. Curious about the square cream/maroon tiles in the K. Is there a story there? Those particular tiles strike me as quintessentially Brit. ETA - They have so much more fun than we do, with English interiors. in fairness, look at the starting point. Not a popcorn ceiling, run of clamshell molding or a snap-in plastic muntin in sight!

Rabbits occasionally eat the foliage on my daylilies and they OFTEN eat some of my perennials to the ground, especially Asiatic lilies. When this happens, they aren't so cute.

Oh, oh. I have HUNDREDS of bulb lillies both asiatic and oriental lillies. But I have a very thickly planted "wooded" area running all along one side of my property line all shrubs planted to attract backyard fruit eating songbirds. When the bunnies run into there, I couldn't see them.

I am actually surprised as we have many neighborhood cats here so I would think that rabbits would avoid the garden. But they were very small yet, so maybe just chased off from the territory accross the street which is a big park.

Rabbits don't come near my yard anymore because my cat leaves their heads on my porch! (literaly) But last year I had a bunny try to make a nest in my garden, I put a rock in the hole and sprinkeled cayenne pepper and minced garlic around it and they never came back! Sorry to all the bunny lovers out there, but this is the nature of a cat! -Jessica

Was just outside watching the bunny. It seems to have taken up living in this bunch of shrubs I have planted over on one side of the yard. Comes out and eats grass and clover of which there is plenty of. Doesn't seem afraid of me and I walk around within 5 feet of it. Could probably get closer if I tried. Doesn't seem to be blessed with an overabundance of common sense.

This is probably a good place to live from a rabbit viewpoint. Plenty of cover in thick shrubs planted with nice thick grass with clover right by for good eats. Plenty to drink also as I have these small wildlife ponds as water for the critters and birds around here.

I had a cute little bunny one spring. No serious damage thru summer, a missing leaf here & there. Late fall a whole plant was chewed almost to the crown, with a pile of round poopies. The plant came back in spring. I use human hair(just sprinkle around the garden) from the barber to keep rabbits away.
