I share Opal's method. This year pickings are slim, guess it depends on the weather. I place mine in a styrofoam coffee cup and place them in a sunny window. The cutting may die back, but almost always there is new growth, and by early May a well established plant is ready to be placed in its permanent home. I usually get a flower stalk the year following placement in the permanent site. Having limited space, I give away most of my new items, which also include stock grown from seeds. In Fall 2013, I nipped a cutting from a plant at a local store which was set aside for disposition, unable to be sold. No flower stalk in 2014, but this year it had one stalk with lilac petals with a yellow center. On the stalk are two proliferates, so the process will hopefully be repeated, with one plant headed to Kentucky and the other locally here in Wisconsin. T.E. Hoffmann, Waukesha USA

Hi Kim, You are welcome! You can pack the cutting in a pot in plastic bag only over a pot. Secure soil with paper tower over the soil and tape it to the pot so it doesn't shift. Wrap entire cutting/pot with the news paper to put in a snug box, fill it with crinkled news paper. Travels great.

I agree with GreenDinos's comment, Forsythia is so easy to propagate. Cut sticks from the long shoots about 6" or so long. Stick them in the ground and keep the soil moist, don't let it dry out. In 2 weeks or so, the sticks will begin to produce roots. Here is how you tell if the sticks have rooted yet. Ever so gently, pull straight up on the stick, if you feel resistance, stop, the roots are beginning. If you feel no resistance, gently push the stick back in its hole. Please wait 2-3 weeks after "sticking" them in the ground, most should have rooted by then. Good luck!

they root rather freely .... i would just fill a pot with some damp media ... and 'stick them'... and cover with a baggie ... and put in bright light indoors.. not sun with the bag over them ... in a week or 3 you can try pulling them out... if it has roots.. it wont ... if it does.. there arent any roots .. you can also leave them in water.. until you JUST see root nods.. then pot them up ... though its been very warm.. i wouldnt mess with them outdoors.. one of these days.. its going to get real cold ... at night ... as to wintering them over.. indoors ... could end up being a PIA ... but worth the try ... do you have a light stand?? btw ... there are MANY mums.. that are not z5 hardy .... it may end up all being for naught ... especially if they were florist flowers.. you dont quite explain ... finally... there was a post within the last week on this exact topic... perhaps you can look down the page and see if others have other ideas ... ken
