Newbie - First year with daylilies -- Pics!

Hi all! This is my first year really into gardening, and I find I'm in love with daylilies. I wanted to share my first gardens with you all. I'm just beginning, so don't have a lot of desirable varieties, but love what I have and plan to add more each year. Thanks for looking!

I am no expert and don't know if there is an exact time to snip back or not. For me it depended on how many seedlings I had in a cell. With no rhyme or reason I often cut back to two in each cell before potting up. After potting up I waited to see which was more vigorous then snipped the other off. Lately I have been either planting in flats or only planting one seed per cell so haven't had to snip back. Happy spring planting!!

Hi there, This is my first attempt at posting photos, so I hope the file size is not too huge. Please help me if I need to be more viewer-friendly with my images. My picture taking abilities are also a bit suspect. :) We have lots of dirt everywhere due to a recent foundation repair on the back of the house. Here goes! This is a front bed I made "lasagna style" last fall and am in the process of planting with perennials and annuals. Here is the middle of the front bed. I have mgs, black-eyed susan vines, and hyacinth bean, which will grow up and over the fencing--I hope! There are holly hocks, cosmos, 4 o'clocks, nicotania, and marigolds, too. Back of the house where you can see the foundation destruction. There are zinns, delphs, cosmos, snappies, cleome, nicotania, and 4 o'clocks all across the back. ws toms in the middle, basil, and rosemary (too tiny to see). The three big toms on the right are from a nursery. Barrell of dwarf sunnies, larkspur, and dahlias. Mgs, zinns, and marigolds. My hope is the MGs and sweetpeas (not seen on sides and behind) will climb up and around the chair. This is a picture from the "back" of the front bed, which is looking from the opposite side of picture #2. Lots of zinns, larkspur, and dahlias. Thanks for looking and letting me share! cheers, NB

Christie Do you remember or can you tell me what bloomed for you best the first year? Lets see if I can remember I need to keep better notes ") zinnia, bachelor buttons, rose moss, gaillarida, cleome, cocks comb, marigold, cosmos, balsam impatients, the hollyhocks were about 2 or 3 years old but I did have some new ones bloom but they didn't get as tall, african daisy, morning glories I think that's all but it has been a long summer. My cone flowers didn't bloom or either did my dianthias. Terren, GREAT IDEA !!! if you fold back one end on itself when applying the tape, it makes a little tab you can grab to pull it off more easily. I will for sure do that this year LOL I ended up using a single edge razor blade to cut the tape. I am glad to have good results to show off tee-hee-hee, I asked alot of ?'s. & got alot of good answers & seeds from several people, I should have been better at keeping notes so I could thank everyone personally but I hope that they see this & know that their time & seeds were not wasted. Judy, you know full well that you are among fellow addicts when it comes to buying plants. And I so love the English roses...just be sure to give them plenty of room. They will need it. Vel, it is a record for me, that is for sure. It was one I got in the fall from Bill Maryott, but no way was able to resist taking pictures of those three together. Thanks Cindy, all of my early clematis are covered in buds. They are hapopy with the strange weather. Rebecca is a true red in my garden...same color as my monitor, and the blooms are large. I agree, you have a nice start, however be warned!! you are starting on a dangerous journey. Do not, I repeat DO NOT go to the Lily Auction, you will be doomed.

Mostly kidding, but there is some truth there. Oh well what the heck, have a good time with your new hobby.

LOL!!! Hmmmm Lily auction...where would that be? I already have Marietta gardens and Eclectic gardens in my favorites from following the posts here. LOL! Thanks for the compliments and encouragement!

Ditch lilies got me too along with Stella's, it's been growing ever since but I don't have very many about 20 with 5 ordered and on their way here Monday. Hope our cool weather holds out.
We have not had 100 degrees once this spring and summer so far. Now watch we'll hit 100 because I open my mouth.

I'm NOT buying anything else this year! Scouts honor! But....Just for fun, I went through Marietta's online shopping guide and went through half of the alphabet...I didn't let myself choose anything over $6 to put in the cart, and only put it in there if I thought it was awesome and really wanted to have it some day.....then for giggles, I went to my cart...over $200 total!!! LOL!! That's hilarious....you're right, this IS dangerous...I'm proud of myself though, I closed out of the site without buying a thing! THAT was WILLPOWER!

Yes, I'd venture to say you're hooked and you've only just begun your trip into the never ending land of "daylily lust"!!! But hey, there are lots of worse addictions out there, so I say, sit back and enjoy the ride! It's worth it!

Welcome Vela. Yep, it's gonna be a long ride. Once you start, you can not finish. BTW, soon, you won't be able to just stick em a basket then close without purchase. When you get there, then you are an addict. We all are and we are not recovering. Your pics are very nice. You have a great start...Ellie

Oh yea, don't take very long at all to be addicted to these gorgeous blooms.I love your Fairy Tale Pink and its one I want to get very soon. I had a friend gave me a fan of red Volunteer,and irs all it took to have me checking out vendors,and looking at every daylily I could find,even tho,I can not buy any right now.I day dream about them and wish for about every one I see.I am new to them, since last spring,and I love them.
Loved all your photos,and hope you post some more.
