When do you start your seeds?

I plan to grow tomatoes from seed this year after last year's dissapointing store bought tomato plants. I'm pretty sure our frost date is April 15th, but pending a favorable weather forecast, I would like to be able to have them hardened off and put out by April 6 when we leave for spring break. Should I be starting the seeds soon? Obviously if it looks like it will be too cold then, I would revert to plan b and figure out some way to keep them alive while we are gone. I have a small green house-y type thing that I can put them in at first. It sits right up next to the house and faces SE. Of course, if they are the green house, then watering becomes an issue. I might could get my next door neighbor to come by once or twice. He brought in our mail when were gone for Christmas.
