I wish I had better luck with Rudbeckia. They are one of my favorite flowers. I figured I was to far south to grow them, but you are proving me wrong ;-)

Laura, I am so happy to see the plants you got from the swap are doing so good! I think the Rudbeckia may be one from me as they look like the ones I have. As far as the hibiscus look at my post with the picture of the "Luna Hibiscus" and and see if it looks like the one you have. I am VERY bad about throwing seeds into a pot and forgetting what they are! Confederate Roses here don't bloom until the fall so I am thinking that one is a "hardy hibiscus" or "dinnerplate" hibiscus. They all look good! nova aka Susan

Susan-I've never grown a Confederate rose before all I know is that whoever brought it to the swap "seemed" to know what it was. I don't have the original tag to help ID the person but it read: Pink Confederate Rose. It doesn't grow like other hybiscus that I have. It isn't as woody the leaves aren't as tough and shinny. So....???

Laura, The hibiscus with the shiny leaves are "tropical hibiscus" and are more or less evergreen. The ones with "Fuzzy" leaves are "hardy hibiscus" and will die to the ground in the winter but will come back from the roots in the spring. Both Confederate Rose and Dinnerplates are "hardies". Dinnerplates are called that because their flowers are 10 inches across or larger [the size of a dinner plate!] How big is the bloom on your hibiscus? I suppose yours could be a confederate rose that is blooming out of sync but the ones I have had always bloomed in September or October. However, after looking back at your picture again and comparing them to the confederate rose and dinnerplate I am growing, the leaves do look more like a confederate rose.The dinnerplates have more "heart" shaped leaves. Whichever "hardy hibiscus" you have it will set seeds so you can start some and have them for the next swap! Susan

I have a Confederate Rose that I picked up at the green market. It's still in it's original pot (looking for a spot for it) and gets very little sun where it is and it's been blooming like crazy.

the flowers are just hybiscus size and the leaves are sort of/ kind of shaped like a maple leaf

It looks like my confederate rose that has been blooming for the past month. My husband tried to delay it's blooming by pruning it for me, said it was "leggy" - it was but it was also loaded with blooms.

Mine came from USF gardens a couple of years ago.

Hi again Laura! Did a little research and Yes what you have is a Confederate Rose probably 'Rubrus' since it blooms all season long. The one I am growing is the 'Plena',which blooms late summer into fall. Do your blooms change color thru the day? Mine start out white in the morning and change to dark pink at the end of the day. Just wondering. Save me some seeds from yours and I'll trade you some seeds off mine! Look out for white flies too! They LOVE confederate roses! Beautiful blooms by whatever name! nova aka Susan

Susan-it stays the same color all day. I'll have to see about seeds. This plant is new to me. It was small when I got it and am a little surprised that it bloomed so quickly.

Mine stays the dark rose color all day too; I bought it expecting it to be 'mutabilis' but it's not. I've had mine for a couple of years but haven't noticed seeds. I'll look for some as I'd love to have a 'mutabilis' also. I do have a rooted cutting of mine, they're pretty easy to do.

...as for seeds? It is dropping the whole flower and there are no seed pods. drats!

Well shoot! Just learned something new. The only flower I have ever seen labeled Confederated Rose was very full, double blooms & started out white, changing color during the day until finally becoming dark pink. Didn't know there was any other kind.

That's the kind I have too.
A couple years ago I planted one in partial shade. Whiteflies just ate it up. Killed it dead.
This year I planted one in full sun in front of the compost bin. It bloomed once in the pot before I planted it. Now it's growing like mad. Hoping for flowers soon. I'll keep an eye out for seeds too.

What I have couldn't be prettier but it's not mutabilis. I'll have to keep looking.
