Can you make ice cream without an ice cream maker?

I found a recipe yesterday for buttermilk ice cream and really want to make it but am not going to buy an ice cream maker for it. Is there a way around getting a maker?

Here's the recipe for those who are curious. It was in Bon Appetit, Oct 2009.

2 cups chilled whole milk

1-1/4 cups sugar

1 cup heavy chilled whipping cream

1/3 cup chilled buttermilk

Combine all ingredients in large bowl, stir until sugar dissolves.

Process in ice cream maker according to mfg's instructions.

Transfer ice cream to container; cover & freeze until firm, at least 4 hours and up to 2 days.
