quick question for a beginner

Ok, I think I know the answer to this but I wanted to check with all of you. If you are making tomato sauce with added spices and veggies (like chopped onions for flavor, no meat), do you have to follow a recipe strictly? Say, for example, we love lots of basil in our sauce - can I just put in however much to taste that we like? Also, if I were to make sauce from the plain tomatoes I can, I first saute garlic and onions in a little butter. If I can the sauce, do I have to omit the butter and be careful what the ratio of onion or garlic to tomatoes is?

There are lots of recipes for sauces out there and I was just trying to find out if I have to follow one if I am just making a simple tomato sauce or if I can make my own and still be safe by following certain guidelines.

TIA!
