I can only tell you about a few. A friend complains about Janice Brown being peach instead of pink, and she lives in the sunny South. My Siloam Double Classic is peachy pink, not true pink, and Always Afternoon is a grayish-lavender, no matter what the weather--yuk! Avedon

That happens here a fair amount. I see purple on websites and I get red...a few actually give me purple. I also can get pink, but peach is often a problem. I assume part of it is my hot humit climate.

My Wineberry Candy always looked just like yours, and I'm in the hot, humid South. Most "purples" have red tones. Your soil maybe part of the problem. I gave several daylilies to my sister in Indiana, and the colors are totally off in her soil. The reds, which are vibrant and true here, are brownish red there. The purples in her soil are much redder.

I'm a florist too and isn't it annoying! The "purples" I've thrown out! Although colors do improve slightly with time I have the same problems you do. If I want a specific color I go to the growers field. Personally I still find it hard to see anything that is a nice clear pink-rose or anywhere near a real purple, lavender or even mauve minus the mud. Generally my experience has been "pink" means peach, "purple" means burgandy - deep red, "mauve" means muddy pink orange. "Lavender" and "blue" are just a joke, but sometimes can be found in eye zones. "Pandora's Box" has a nice purple eye on a very pale yellow cream flower, but the grower sent the wrong one the first time (pale peach with red eye zone) and so I ended up getting it from another gardening friend.

I also have Siloam Double Classic (lovely fragrant, gorgeous shape and peach), Always Afternoon (mauve, but muddy - should I move her to the shade?) Some people claim they get these true colors, but I have to wonder if they maybe don't see colors the same way I do, or just somehow have the perfect climate, PH, moisture level or some magic combination. I know for a fact that my Prairie Blue Eyes is always much more lavender-mauve looking than my much expected Always Afternoon even though PBE is a rather old cultivar. Still I would not say PBE is only "mauve" on the purple scale but since it's not too muddy it's one of my favorites.

French Tudor was one I chose in the field a few years ago as the clearest soft pink I could find with a nice size flower. Royal Palace Prince is another I have that is good, but as it is a few days away from blooming I can't describe it.

This colour problem is one of the reasons I've tried making my own hybrid crosses, but I don't recommend that approach. Keep trying, but stay sceptical :-)

Three years ago I worked on putting together an all pink and red raised bed in front of my house. If you want a true pink, the key phrase to look for in the color description is " blue or lavender pink" Look at more then one nursery site, look on Tinkers' data base and past posts from this forum from the same zone. That's my winter mission to research next years additions with as many references as possible. If the majority of all photos look like what I want I chance it as long as it is $20 or less. I have gone to Daylily farms to choose in person and found that is not a sure thing either. Depending on the time of day, temperature and most recent weather they can fool you totally not to mention your garden's soil may not match the field soil it came from So,this year I did the full research on what was offered there in the colors I was interested in before the DL trip. I left a little in the budget to cover impulse buys that day.
All you can do is, all you can do then take it with a grain of salt.I figure, by trial and error I will finally get the colors I want. The Ooops make nice gifts to friends with bare patches in their gardens. I tell them to come shop in my garden, I'll show them what is free for adoption, lol. I am going to another Daylily farm this very evening, Mystic Meadows Daylilies. Did the research, got my list, I takes me chances. Besides, my garden is just 3' away from being full up. If I did not give away my less then favorites how would I have room for my new loves. I can't imagine not having any new ones, especially after looking at all the stunning blooms on this form. Just have fun. Gardens are always in flux, that's what draws us in to tinker some more.

I have Blackberry Candy planted in heavy clay soil. I did move a piece of it to a raised bed with amended soil and the color seems to have stayed the same yellow. Here's a picture:

The one that changes for me, and I don't know why, is Persian Shrine. When I first planted it, it was a medium rose red. Now it is darker. I have never moved it from the clay soil. Now it always comes up darker.

Mary, my Always Afternoon was muddy until I moved her to the shade. That photo is from last year but she looks the same this year. Pretty, not muddy.

Indian Giver is true purple for me, every bloom, both years I've had it.

Swallowtail Kite is truly lavender orchid colored but changes from one bloom to the next to darker plum or paler lavender. LOVE it.

I think the lack of direct sun ( extreme cloudiness) can have a big effect on bloom color. Dakar here will go from black to a dingy brown if we have a few days of cloudy weather. Francois Verhaert told me that when he got it ( and planted it in Belgium where he lives) that he was SURE Pat Stamile had sent him the wrong plant. Belgium apparently doesn't get as much sunlight as we do either. So attribute at least part of the color changes to your climate! Soil and drought can also affect this. Since we deal with drought frequently here, I can attest that when we get rain, colors are immediately more vivid. Many of the Spacecoast series get really "orangey" ( ugly) when we are dry and then they get a lot pinker when it rains.

There aren't many daylily farms in the Portland OR area. I drove to one in SW WA one day, an hour drive each way and all I bought was Swallowtail Kite. I am very happy with that purchase though.

I did just buy Night Beacon from the same lady I bought Indian Giver from, Eclectic Gardens, she said it was purple like Indian Giver but it hasn't bloomed yet. She sells at local plant sales or mail order not from her garden.

I've toured Gail Austin's Hemerocallis Society garden when the daylilies are in bloom but she has lots of red, orange and yellow that just won't work in my garden. Lovely to visit though.

It is very cloudy and wet here in spring. Usually stops raining about the 4th of July until mid September but not this year. It has been raining for three days now. Almost an inch of rain on Sunday...My daylilies are very splotchy.

My soil is acid clay that has been amended for fifteen years with compost. I don't fertilize much, just tossed out some alfalfa pellets. I do have more scapes and buds than ever before even on daylilies I've had a long time.

Sorry, i wasn't trying to be a pain but I thought to be helpful. Always Afternoon was always mauve in my garden and I don't particulairly like mauve mud so I tossed it. Some are just prettier than others and while Dakar is as dark this year, sometimes it's almost black. Love the dl...Ellie
