Comments (16)I live farther north in Palos Verdes (next to Redondo Beach) with similar marine conditions. I've grown without any mildew problems: Mellow Yellow - Hybrid Tea (grown in a pot even though it is a big rose) Sunsprite - Floribunda (grown in the ground) Gemini - Hybrid Tea (in the ground - not sure how it would do in a pot - it is somewhat big; awesome rose for cutting) Honey Bouquet - Floribunda (very clean, lots of flowers, but this was in the ground) Sexy Rexy - Floribunda (blooms in huge flushes, also in the ground) Trumpeter - Floribunda (grown in a pot, it is a relatively small rose) Gourmet Popcorn (never out of bloom and tough as nails) I have not personally grown these roses. At the South Coast Botanic Gardens here in Palos Verdes the healthiest disease free roses I've consistently seen during multiple visits throughout the year were: Midas Touch (small hybrid tea) Mardi Gras (floribunda) - lots of flowers Sun Flare (floribunda) Passionate Kisses (floribunda) Molineux (David Austin English shrub) The following got some mildew in my garden but baking soda and canola oil spray minimized it: Mr. Lincoln Double Delight Iceberg (tree rose in a pot) Cheri Parfait for me was a rust magnet. No matter what I tried it got rust. After seeing the board comments some have experienced this problem and some have not. Most likely the garden centers do not pay much attention to their sources as long as they are cheap.... You might consider one of the roses mentioned here grown as a tree. Tree roses grown in pots are really beautiful. I like the fact that people can walk over and smell it without having to bend down. Hope you find the perfect gift! Comments (5)Betty Boop is a great rose in Del Cerro (on a hill next to a canyon in San Diego). "Del Cerro" btw, translates to "of the hill" and is near San Diego State University on the east side fo San Diego. My mother lives there, and I tend her rose garden there. Here's a link to the San Diego Rose Society's best performing roses for San Diego divided as between coastal and inland areas. Most of these however do need spraying. Generally "coastal" to San Diegans means within 5 miles of the beach, where there is a marine layer. For no spray, Julia Child would be my first choice, followed closely by Betty Boop, Lovestruck, Mardi Gras, Moondance, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Home Run, Hot Cocoa and the new AARS one Easy Does It. Do NOT get any variation of Knock Out -- it mildews badly in San Diego. Also tell her that the best place to get roses is NOT HOME DEPOT or any other box store. Make her go to Kniffings nursery in El Cajon during bare root season (December- January) and get her roses there -- they can answer any questions she may have and make very knowledgable recommendations. Comments (18)THanks, guys! Yep, I had a fabulous time, for sure. Thanks for the ID on the orchids, Zozzl. Katkin, I swear I looked at literally thousands of roses, and I didn't see the FIRST black spot! Not a single SPOT! They are just breathtaking and truly healthy! Treefrog, I wish I could have bottled the fragrance, for sure. Oh, it was heavenly! And thanks for the best wishes for my daughter & hubby. They are a really happy couple, and I think they are perfect for each other. *sneaking in another photo here, for those who commented on the dress...the neckline was so pretty!* I wish I had more pictures of the bluff area. On a sunny day, you can see forever up there. But on a cooler, hazy day, it is very "gothic novel" romantic. A wonderful spot! Marcia...See MoreConifer for San Diego California?
Comments (34)concerning "double digit" low temps I was there in 1990 when I believe that the low was around 9!!! that said, the coastal land near-coastal area is mostly USDA 9a and fairly mild most of the time as far as winters go---but my place gets some white frost on the ground most every year so "zone 9" is not a magic charm against cold weather by any means. FWIW, the biggest cordyline australis in bandon that I'm aware of is probably about 25' tall (coos bay/north bend plants are about the same size). the big "champion" douglas fir your are referring to are actually several miles inland around coquille and myrtle point generally in protected ravines that are moister in the dry summers and protected to some degree from wind storms. no doubt there were also big trees closer to the coast once upon a time but they likely got cut down rather quickly when the logging business came in the latter part of the 19'th century. a great book about the various champion trees of many species is "forest giants of the pacific coast" by Robert Van Pelt (he also has a good book on the various champion trees of Washington state as well). the "giants' book is beautifully illustrated so it's great just to look at as well as read through....See Morehoovb zone 9 sunset 23
