How Much Fruit Do You Get From Your Fruit Trees In Containers?
Comments (26)While citrus is young count the leave and divide it on 20. that is how many fruits you may leave on them to bear. On adult trees 10 leave is enough for photosintesing for one fruit. The better plant is doing with foliage - more fruits you will collect. So pay attention on a mineral fertilising of your trees and they will pay you back with the fruits!! That lemon of mine lost all leave in december and fruits never turn yellow - I had to collect them in april, so it could grow new leaves. This Meyer got 7 lemons This wild citrus is 5 years old, does not grow at all, but give me 2 fruits every year!! And it is very rare that you will collect more fruits than volume of your pot every year...See MoreLychee - Will I get fruits
Comments (4)Tamiroquai, It's interesting to know that you can plant lychees in Israel. Is that where you're from? I'm no expert in lychees, but I do know that they love being watered--especially when they are growing. So, keeping your lychee watered well will certainly help plant growth and fruit production when the weather warms up. So, how warm is your temperature there now and how low does it get in the Winter? With regards to the female flowers showing up first, I was also interested in finding that out too, so I did a search and came up with this link: http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/lychee.html#Blooming%20and%20Pollination I don't know if it matters which kind show up first. I think eventually the three types of flowers mentioned in the article will show up: "There are 3 types of flowers appearing in irregular sequence or, at times, simultaneously, in the lychee inflorescence: a) male; b) hermaphrodite, fruiting as female (about 30% of the total); c) hermaphrodite fruiting as male. The latter tend to possess the most viable pollen. Many of the flowers have defective pollen and this fact probably is the main cause of the abortive seeds and also the common problem of shedding of young fruits. The flowers require transfer of pollen by insects." So, it looks like the bugs will play an important part in the pollination process. If your plant is planted in the ground and outside (that is not in a greenhouse), I think there's every chance for it to be pollinated by the insects in your area. The blooms on your lychee all look very healthy to me. They don't seem to have anything bugging them, so I think they should bear fruit for you. Here, I have web worm problems. This year, I haven't seen yet and hopefully not at all. By the way, what's the variety you have there? I have a few here--Mauritius, Sweet Heart, Emperor, Brewster and Hak Ip. Not all of them are bearing fruit this year, except Hak Ip and a small Brewster in the pot. All the best to your lychee and hope to see more of your updates as your lychee develops fruit for you....See Morefruiting lychee tree dying
Comments (3)For what its worth...wind does play a big role on lychee trees...check lycheesonline.com. Also when its windy the faster your pot dries. Check for moisture with a thin wood dowel...stick the wood dowel carefully close to the bottom of the pot and see if the stick is moist...if not water it. Lychee trees require a lot more water than other fruit trees...learned this one from Harry and others on here! Also, since you just purchased the tree recently, that could very well be the main reason. I'm sure its going through some adjustments from the nursery to your house. Good luck! Comments (18)I get NONE, except for lemons on my meyer for my fish dinners and a few Oro grapefruit which I give to my boss for letting me bring to work. lol. Literally, there is not a one that deserves any of my fruit since NO ONE helps me care for them, nor are interested in my trees..I don't even eat citrus. I grow them for fragrance. I am getting a new tree, a Kishu which I can eat and I am hoping I get lots of of that. As for the other 30 or so trees, I pluck every fruit off before they can even grow, except for my lemon meyer which I use on my fish, saying about 4 pounds and my Oro, about 6 lbs.....See Morech3rri
